Re: 2018 Midterm Elections Coverage

The difference between the gambling odds and the election odds in practice is that you generally can gamble again and again in a short period of time, whereas elections happen every two years or less. Imagine that you can make only thirty bets in your lifetime, making one every two years, and the m...

The scotus nominee rape allegation took a disappointing turn. The accuser is asking for a delay+FBI investigation, but the Republicans are playing hard ball. I'm not sure what influence anyone can have short of another shoe dropping. I'm sure having a hearing would be better than not having it, but...

I'd classify "we're jammed, so we're going to shoot at any aircraft we can detect without bothering with deconfliction" as an obvious mistake on the part of the Syrians.

Other tidbit, model doesn't account for candidate quality inn a previous election. If you run up the table against Todd legitimate rape Akins, the model assumes you're a godlike incumbent instead of really lucky. * Yeah, that's definitely a factor. There's definitely a sense of easier/harder races ...

I've got two siblings married to two siblings, and a further sibling married to one of the other family's cousins. I'm sure this makes the "sibling in law" thing complicated, especially as there are a fair pile of siblings in all concerned families. Maybe "redneck" or "count...

Re: The Darker Side of the News

In a typical AA system, the stationary radar 'paints' a strong dorected beam on the target, and the missiles fly towards the reflection of that beam. I am not sure on the details, but I think it's possible that a large aircraft flies in the beam and a missile will follow to the stronger relfection....

Sure, yeah. The fact that North Korea's economy is garbage, particularly in contrast to it's southern neighbor, isn't something worth arguing about. But it's also unique in a few other related ways. It's very authoritarian, it's very isolationist. And yet, you've still got some folks trying to set u...

I've been thinking that maybe there should be a federal law that says that state and local governments can make gun registries, but that a registered gun is legal (for that owner) and is grandfathered past any future regulations. Sure, they tend to be fairly solid, but that doesn't mean the person inside is any less vulnerable to flooding. Trump's not angling for a logical critique of his words based on the facts. He doesn't care about such things much at all. It's pretty much "us good, democrats bad", only better communicated. A lot of his phrasing plays to the partisan divide, and makes use of existing biases or communicat...

I don't think that adds up. There are plenty of rich, white, American men who would love to be president, but don't stand a chance.
