Re: 2103: "Midcontinent Rift System"

Wouldn't it be simpler just to set it up to dual boot BSD?

This is, of course, known as Hertzsprung-Russell's Paradox.

Re: 1649: "Pipelines"

Some quick work with a ruler suggests that my screen the top box is about 5.75" tall, and that the person in the 2nd box is about 12.5x taller then the mini-first box. That makes the person in the 2nd box 6 feet tall, which doesn't seem like an unreasonable height to me. I get about 4 inches f...

Re: 1445: "Efficiency"

You should always start with analyzing whether the time you spend on your analysis would be bigger than the expected maximum difference in time spent on strategy A or B. But before you do that it would be wise to analyse if the analysis of whether the analysis is required isn't more time consuming ...

2 thoughts on this: 1) It would be a supreme dickwad (a brand new level of Super-dickery) who magically transports ~7 billion people to RI for the jump and then doesn't send them back after it's over. 2) I would really like to meet this being and shake his/her/its hand/claw/tentacle/appendage-beyon...

Re: What-if 0007: Everybody Out

I may be missing the point here, but why is there any net energy needed at all to lift an object from the Earth's surface to escape velocity using an orbital elevator, other than to lift the first load half way and to overcome any losses in the system? I thought the whole point was that the space el...
