Re: Centripetal acceleration at nonzero latitudes

Gravity is still pointed towards the center of the planet. The normal force holding you up is normal to whatever surface you stand on - if Earth were a perfect sphere this force would be straight "up", colinear with gravity. So we need another force angled somewhat towards the nearest pol...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

Drowsy Turtle, why is it myth when God does something, but NASA moving a rover with their "hands" on Mars is science? I don't understand your question? "Why is reality real"? If you were to say, stuff happens, I'd say sure. It does. On the other hand, if you said "God does ...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

Would you agree, if Moses gave a scientifically verifiable method of parting a sea, we could believe he did it at one point (us being able to replicate/confirm it)? Ignoring for a second that there is no scientific explanation given - no. The Ancient Greeks considered the atom, but never developed ...

like, if you find a building, and it's got some wood in it that you can accurately age via the rings in the wood, and you can also date the building itself, you can date the age of the piece of wood in the building when it was cut down, and then cross reference that with the age of the building. so...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

Drowsy Turtle: Tree rings are useful, because they tell the C14 concentration in the air when the ring was formed. The C14 curve formed from yearly samples is used to calibrate the measurements when radiocardon dating objects, and the calibration is essential for the method to give good answers. Tr...

Re: Religion: The Deuce

Drowsy Turtle, the bible uses the annual calendar of the Hebrews. As to dates, it also uses the reign of a kings length, or the age of a person (usually followed by their sons birth etc) for us to follow. So yes, while not the type of calender we use it is from what I can see continuous throughout....

Re: Is it possible to have a rational debate on global warmi

I have doubts about the efficacy of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, especially since working with climate proxies. Thats nice? Proxies are useful, but they have nothing to do with calculating our radiative energy balance. They are pretty much only used for reconstructing past climates. It's ext...

Re: Is it possible to have a rational debate on global warmi

I see no discrepancy. Literally nobody is saying only anthropogenic factors affect climate. Therefore, the question "Do we affect the climate?" inevitably leads on to the question "How much do we affect the climate?". Answering only the first question adds no value to the convers...

Re: Is it possible to have a rational debate on global warmi

Everyone's opinion has value. I disagree, opinions by themselves are valueless, its the reasoning, logic and rational that is the basis of the opinion that lends value to the opinion. Notice your AAAS posting does not disagree with anything I've said. Again I disagree. You said. 2) To what extent i...

An example of why the mirror problem isn't a problem: Try writing on tracing paper (or write on normal paper so heavily that you can see it from the back) and holding it up to a mirror. Notice anything? The view through the paper is the same as the view in the mirror - so how exactly is the x axis i...

Re: Magnets: how do they work?

The physics of metal is all wrong. Iron is the worst offender. Metallic bonds are explained by the "sea of electrons" model. Essentially, metal atoms all group together, sharing their electrons along the outside of the entire mass. This makes purified metals an extremely strong substance:...
