Re: Active topics vs new posts

You can use the New Posts to keep track of what's been active since your last visit, whereas Active Topics will return the same list. So for example, I visit now and view new posts, and then mark them all as read. If I visit an hour later, it'll only show me the new posts in the last hour, whereas A...

Re: Psychology Today

Ahem. Psychology Today . My personal opinion? Their articles are interesting enough that I've bookmarked the website, but Scientific American Mind is better. That's good to hear, because I just started a subscription to SciAm Mind. I read it a bit online before making the jump, and it worked out we...

Re: XKCD Book Club -- Suggestions

Ok, bought the first three books, and started on White Noise. It seems like a quick read, especially compared to all the non-fiction I usually read. I was worried about having enough time to read it, but that doesn't seem like it'll be an issue. What's the schedule going to be? We're in the period n...

Re: This is more than a little odd (closet as homeless shelter)

Still, I'd talk to her and if she weren't a nutjob then I'd probably let her stay. She has been secretly living in a stranger's closet for a year. Doesn't that qualify her as a bit of a nutter already? Not really, she just seems to be in a bit of tough times. She's kind of nutty, yes, but not the d...

Ok, voted. Marked my 4 choices on my list of stuff to read later, too, in case they don't win (which a couple of them aren't doing as of right now).

I'm partial to this copy paper commercial with the girl abusing the copy machine. It's not amazing like some of the ones linked here; I just find it really amusing.

Wow, that's a great story. Link's dead, unfortunately. I'd let her stay as well. Not only did he kick her out, but he had her arrested? After a YEAR I wonder how much she ended up knowing about him. I did look up the story on Google news, and the story makes a bit more sense- she was arrested by the...

Also, I you could probably win by simply showing the judge the board and go "Look! He's got three rooks! I win cause he cheats!" Underpromoting a pawn is perfectly legal. And might I also note that it is a very badass tactic to use in a position where promoting to a queen would lead to a ...

Re: XKCD Book Club -- Suggestions

I'm not sure I like the "voting" solution. It just sounds like it would be a popularity contest. *shrug* Isn't that the point, though? To pick something that the most people will want to read? I can see a few concerns popping up. Like, are we going to stereotypically pick sci-fi all the t...

I wonder it it spikes each MWF at 0:00.

Re: Should Clinton step down?

E8 is a bishop. D8 is a pawn. It's not just a promotion issue; it's impossible because the dark pawns start on the 7th rank and move towards 1. If we ignore that D8 pawn, then it's impossible for the doubled f pawns since one of them can't have crossed over from the A or B file, since they're not a...

Re: XKCD Book Club -- Suggestions

Someone think up some complex system on how a book gets chosen. I mean, we only need a few more posts and we've already got a year's worth of reading material. How about: 1) Each person can nominate one book, along with a short synopsis: If they've read it before, what they thought of it, why they'...

Windows XP has a problem with long paths. I forget the exact details, but a friend of mine had this same problem. If I were you I'd replace the GPU (depending on how long you've had it) and power supply (since you've said it's somewhat old), just to be safe. But if you really want to investigate, try installing temperature and power supply wattage monitors and running some experiments. CPUs are supposed to shut...

Re: Computer shuts down at arbitrary points

The only thing common between these two pcs is the case, the power supply and the gpu (8800 Ultra). Best guess would be that the gpu is causing problems, probably when it's rendering something specific in the games when it shuts down. It might just be a bad card, not a bug specific to all of them. ...

Okay, so I finished the game now. It's short, right, but the story fit the timespan quite well, in addition to being well done overall. The game itself was of good quality as well, with no bugs in the game itself. This is a fair assessment. Granted, I'm a fan of Penny Arcade, but I really liked it....

It will not format the hard drive automatically. If the hard drive were unformatted, it might ask you, but it won't even ask you and should read the files perfectly fine.

Do you have a free hard drive bay for it? is it the same operating system on both computers?

If at all possible, I'd strongly recommend renting out to someone you already know, even in a friend-of-a-friend sense -- at least this way you have some basic knowledge going into the whole situation. Or if this is not possible, try to seek someone from somewhere that you are a part of, be it an o...
