Re: W(h)anganui: Place Names

One of the challenging aspects of readdressing historic grievances is the question of when to move on and when enough is enough. This is heightened when the issues are between two groups with vastly different frames of reference. Concepts of ownership and the spiritual meaning of land and its connec...

Re: W(h)anganui: Place Names

Hm. Doesn't the Wh combo get pronounced with an 'f' sound anyway? (In the Maori language, and the answer is Yes, Meaux) So changing the h would actually drastically change the pronunciation? That's kind of unfortunate. There is variation between iwi (tribes) regarding the pronunciation of "wh&...

Hope

From NZHerald.co.nz
Rarely has a single individual in recent times given so much of the world cause to dare to anticipate that a better world can yet be made.

Obama represents change and hope. It seems that that is enough in the eyes of the Nobel Peace prize decision makers.

A nude shot when you were eight doesn't make you a dirty little criminal who will be a pariah for the rest of your life. Hell, most people won't even recognize her in a few years, it's called puberty. And choices are a byproduct of living in society. Of course it does not make her dirty or a crimin...

Most laws are arbitrary in that they draw a line in the sand (in this case age) where they deem certain actions as allowable or not as a means to protect those who are perceived to be unable to protect themselves or make informed consent. The nature of large societies is that it is unreasonable and ...

I am not arguing from the "It's porn" angle - but from informed consent. In NZ - not until age 18 are legal contracts enforceable. Therefore that is an age (albeit arbitrary) it is deemed a person has the cognitive capacities (some of which do not fully develop until early to mid-twenties)...

I find the Bill henson pictures to be art, not porn. One is now my desktop picture. However, if my parents see it, I'll be in massive trouble, as it is obviously porn to them. It's this one. A possibly entirely an improbable response - but how about one large panel with chalk-board (blackboard) paint? Then you and your friends can use chalk to decorate it and it can be wiped clean with a cloth or the rain.
