Re: Puzzles from the xkcd book

I'd like to try and work through the puzzles and not just look up the answers, but I could really use some hints on where to start. So far I've gotten the puzzle in the intro, the braille on 1012, and most of the info for the hex key on 110120 -- I'm just not sure how to xor something in hex, I've o...

Music based on xkcd

I'm senior music major, looking to be a composer. Last summer, I wrote a theme and variations based on some xkcd comics (162, 150, 123, 77, & 55) and finally got a recording of it on Monday. The recording is track 5 of my recital on my website: http://sites.google.com/site/kristascompositions/Ho...

Re: How many tone rows are there?

I don't have my textbook on me, but I think there's a listing of which hexachords (and therefore tone rows) are only partially invertible or transposable. I might look it up when I get back home after my interview this weekend.

Re: The Freelance Music Archive.

I'm finishing up a college degree in music (and then doing gradschool). My field is composition. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with this site, but I am looking for ways to get my website out there. Tell me more, I guess is what I'm saying.

Re: Neal Stephenson - Anathem

I read it in two days in January. At first, I thought to myself, "Stephenson, you're confusing me with all these made up words!" But after a couple chapters I couldn't put it down, and ended up doing nothing but reading for those two days. I'm not sure if it was glorious or depressing (doi...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Earthsea yet. Certainly starts making up her own language there. Also one of my favorite series.

Re: Misheard Lyrics

When I was listening to the soundtrack from "Wicked" I always thought that the line in "Dancing through Life" was

make sure you wear less /trouble and strife
when it is actually
make sure you're where less /trouble is rife

Ich gerade von Berlin zurückgekommen. Ich bin nicht Muttersprachler, aber die meisten Leute konnten nicht sagen, dass ich amerikanisch bin. Ich würde auch gern auf Deutsch korrespondieren.

Re: Think Before Naming Your Child

As I grew older, I became frustrated that my mother did not use her opportunity to name any of her kids with the initials DNA or RNA -- she and my dad are both chemistry teachers, but both of my brothers and I are no where near : JTA, KRA, PCA. Oh well. I, unfortunately, will most likely not have th...

Re: xkcd Band?

I'm a music major looking to be a composer. I haven't really written non-classical, though I would like to learn. I am very good with notes and writing out stuff: I have a program that can export .pdfs of sheet music. I also play cello (10 years) piano (12) and am learning clarinet and viola. Sounds...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

I compose music, play the cello and piano, sing and and now trying to learn a variety of other instruments... I wrote a piece inspired by the comic, and thought that people here might like to know. This could potentially be the best thing ever. I'm currently working on getting it recorded... kinda....

Re: xkcd theme songs

yes, I would like to share a recording with everyone. Since I'm a mac user, I already have garageband, though I've never used it. I thought it was for people who didn't read music. But, like I said, if I wait a bit, I might be able to round up some live people with physical instruments and record. I...

Re: xkcd theme songs

I wrote a theme and variations on the xkcd classics. It's for mixed quartet (what four instruments happen to be available) and since I'm in Germany without a printer, I can't actually get it played. Any suggestions? otherwise, I can just wait till I get home in two weeks.

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

I'm Krista, born in North Dakota, but I usually list Nebraska as home now, since I'm there for University. If sometimes my sentence structure seems strange, it's because I'm finishing up a study abroad in Berlin, and can't always translate back to English properly. I compose music, play the cello an...
