Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

If all the schools in Italy were faith based except one, one which was reserved for the tiny amount of people in the country who don't worship the God of Christians, Jews, and Muslims, and that one was completely secular, you would all still be complaining.

Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

You know, I just did a little mental exercise. Yes, and it's lovely for you that you happen to be privileged enough to be able to imagine a world where you are in the religious minority and have it be just a hypothetical situation, without the history or the current reality backing it up... When I ...

Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

Why is a religious government necessarily a bad thing, if it represents such a large percent of the population? Should government not represent the people? The point is the cross in the classroom isn't hurting anyone, and people generally like having them, so whats the problem? I didn't mean to impl...

Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

The U.S. has many different religions, races, and creeds. Italy doesn't. Over 90% of Italians are catholic, and more are Christian. Thats a higher percent than Jews in Israel. They don't have to be Catholic, they chose to be. You defend a theocracy in terms of its democratic support? You claim that...

Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

I did read every post in this thread. I didn't say the EU court had no influence, or there wouldn't be any problems with Italy ignoring the ruling. I said Italy is sovereign, which it is. I also said the EU court does not have the same power over Italy that the SCOTUS has over a state, because of sa...

Re: Crucifixes banned in public schools - Italy in uproar

So this is supposed to prevent persecution? The court order comes from outside Italy; it is persecution against Italian Catholics. If the Italian people wanted their culture to be less Catholic, they could change it themselves. And no, the EU court is not comparable to SCOTUS. In the US the Federal ...

Ok, that obviously slightly changes things. But I have to wonder if this is ordinary motherly worrying that happens whenever a child does something, ie first drives, goes off to college, etc. or a rational assessment. Heres the article I found: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/0...

Re: Dutch court case to stop 13 year old's solo yacht trip

If a 13 year old was accepted to oxford or harvard, given a scholarship, based on admissions criteria(service, sports, ecs, gpa, rank, sats, IQ, essays, letters of rec, etc. Basically they legitimately got in, and didn't just bribe their way in by building a new wing on the school), then should the...

Re: Dutch court case to stop 13 year old's solo yacht trip

Cathrl, as technology improves, the lowest realistic age to attempt this trip would likely decrease, right? Say she does it in two years, at 16. Then someone invents a boat 10 years later thats easier to control, or better sails, etc. Then a 14 or 15 year old does it. See the problem? Theres also mo...
