Re: 1346: "Career"

I read it dream as in Nocturnal Coma Hallucination. By my reading when he talks about realistic, he doesn't mean in terms of how realistic the job is, but in terms of how realistic it is for him to have a given dream.

Re: 1216: "Sticks and Stones"

Now that i think about it even more, i wonder if you ever need to use the word literally except for emphasis. Now figuratively you definitely need otherwise the interpretation by default is literally. I think you would use literally in a case where the situation you were describing seems improbable...

Re: 1208: "Footnote Labyrinths"

But if it is a House of Leaves reference, than it makes it a bit pitiful, since footnotes are emplayed a lot better there. I think I'd enjoy this comic way more if I hadn't read it. Well, we are talking about a thrice weekly, often humorous webcomic, not a several hundred page densely written metaf...

Re: 1208: "Footnote Labyrinths"

I think there's a pretty decent chance this is at least partially intended as a House of Leaves reference, given that work's heavy use of footnotes, and the labyrinth motifs in it.

Re: 1194: "Stratigraphic Record"

I figured the implication was that Earth could have possibly born life that long ago, and we can never know anything about it because any fossil record has been melted down and recycled into new continents. But I'm not seeing why this is such a big deal, we know that for several billion years all w...

Re: 1182:"Rembrandt Photo"

"It's a painting of Rembrandt being pulled over for speeding and asked for his documentation."

"But that's completely anachronistic."

"I suppose it's a use of artistic license."

The puntential is limitless!

Re: 1179: "ISO 8601"

Clearly the best way to present the date is 13.0.0.3.8. Clear, unambiguous, and reminds us all that the world has yet to be destroyed.

Re: 1178: "Pickup Artists"

Exactly, the only reason women (I know) deny sex, is because they are afraid to be hurt Sometimes women 'deny' sex because they don't want sex at all. Sometimes they 'deny' sex because they don't want sex at that moment or in those circumstances. Sometimes they just don't want sex with the person o...

Re: 1178: "Pickup Artists"

I don't think anyone is saying "Pickup artists have extraordinary power and are mind controlling women," though. They're saying that the problem with PUA culture is the way it encourages men to think about women.

Re: 1178: "Pickup Artists"

The guy that said people hate puas because it feels like cheating and they don't want someone else getting a leg up on the game has the right idea. Also people think it should be a natural thing and I understand how breaking it down to a science is considered creeping. Also interesting how 3/4 of t...

Re: 1178: "Pickup Artists"

Dislike of pickup artists (or, more generally, pickup artistry) is not equivalent to disliking casual sex, confidence in men, or men in general (no one has claimed this last yet, but I've seen it come up in other discussions). It's more about the assumptions Pickup Artistry makes, especially things ...
