Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

To clarify: I maybe shouldn't have used the word "maul"--I just wanted a term for huge friggin' hammer. Greathammer is the word for Large warhammers, isn't it? Those, then. The point is that the dervish variant would functionally work similarly, but instead of doing a whirling dance around...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

I've been discussing this with some other players, but as I don't have the details worked out yet, I haven't taken it to the DM. The group generally thinks it's varying degrees of kickass but doesn't exactly make sense. Would it be a little too ludicrous to homebrew a variant of the Dervish prestige...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

Just keep in mind that you'd have to get all the rogue levels out of the way before you started taking any Paladin ones, due to the whole multiclass rule thingy. There's a race in Fiendish Codex II called Hellborn, who are more or less dragonborn for infernal creatures, who have paladin as their fa...

Does monkeying around with BASIC count? In tenth grade, I made a couple of surrealistic text-based adventures on the TI, as well as this customizable Rock-Paper-Scissors simulator (using a random number generator as an opponent), and a thrilling sequel entitles Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard Spock.

Re: What do you think of the Serenity RPG?

Surely it depends heavily on who the DM is? (This wouldn't be your first pen-and-paper RPG, would it?) Yeah, but a bad system is going to bad even with a good DM. FATAL is perhaps a bit too extreme to be a serious example, but it demonstrates the point. I think a really excellent DM would be able t...

If there's cracks large enough for a Half-Orc to squeeze through that are covered in mosses and lichen and such while the corridors themselves are completely bare, that's a decent enough warning (aside from the door slamming shut) that danger is afoot. I'd also make one of the cracks be the escape ...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

So a new trap in a dungeon I threw together has led me to wonder about the logistics of gelatinous cube interaction. Okay, imagine a corridor which branches left and right at a 90 degree angle. The hallway is 10 by 10, making it the perfect environment for a gelatinous cube, and once the players rea...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

I don't think you would be bending any rules. There's lots of pricing information and rules in the DM guide for custom items. If you still don't want you're DM to go through that, that's fine. The rules for making custom magical items in 3.5 D&D are horribly broken. Many low level spells have f...

Re: Dungeons and Dragons (and other tabletop RPGs)

Finding flaws in the CR system is trivial? The CR system is intended to help DMs find an appropriate challenge. It does a very poor job of it. My reasoning was that the efreet would make a bargain with the kobolds: as the kobold's occupation is filling the hoard of a red dragon, he exchanges their loyalty and a large cut of what goes to the dragon's hoard (as well as keeping his presence unknown to said dragon) for one wish per kobold, st...
