Re: Tips on applying for summer REUs and other research?

I'm going to leach on to this topic with a question of my own: I'm in the process of applying for some REUs, and I don't quite know how to approach faculty members for letters of recommendation. How much time should you give them to write the letters? And if you're applying for multiple programs, do...

Public Speaking Class

I know this is a tired stereotype, but alas, I am an engineering student who fears speaking in front of her classmates for a period longer than 5 minutes. I blush, I sweat, I stutter, I forget. Well, as part of a requirement, I am now taking a public speaking class. Any tips for overcoming fear of s...

Re: Confessional Bed - Not just for pillow talk!

Confession: My mood and general emotional well-being revolves largely around Facebook. I get insanely happy every time I see that I have a new message or wall post, and I have taken to constantly checking every five seconds to see whether or not a little red flag of notification has appeared. I also...

Re: Battlestar Galactica (spoilers rampant like Durandal)

I suppose that's true. But didn't she know about downloading by then as well? So getting spaced would be a nasty experience, but she'd survive in sorts. I'm not sure. Adama, Starbuck, and Roslin certainly knew, but would that information be disseminated to the entire military? Even if she did know,...

Re: Battlestar Galactica (spoilers rampant like Durandal)

Here's my take on it: Boomer was rejected by the humans once she shot Adama. Tyrol basically destroyed any stake she had left in the human world when they were in the brig together way back when, saying things such as "You're a machine. Machines don't have feelings," and denying that their...

Re: Envrionmental Engineering + The major of lolwut = Law Degree

I'm majoring in Environmental Engineering here at Northwestern. Law school is a pretty popular follow-up to this degree as far as I know, so no, you're not crazy.

Re: The Martial Arts Thread

I get the general feeling from browsing this thread that aikido is pretty impractical for actual use in the real world, i.e. self-defense. I was wondering how aikido ranks in regards to exercise. Is it a good way to get fit?

Battlestar Galactica (the new series) - Bear McCreary does this blend of minimalism, orchestra, and percussion, which is nothing short of epic.

Gattaca

The Pianist

Chocolat/Benny & Joon - both by Rachel Portman

The Phantom of the Opera - my all-time favorite musical

Diff Eq Question

I've been trying to separate this equation for ages, but every different approach I use just leaves me stuck.

x^2*dy/dx = 1-x^2 + y^2 -x^2*y^2

Any hints on how to separate the equation?

Re: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (And Spinoffs)

I love all things Whedon. I have the Chosen box set with all seven seasons of Buffy. When people see it on my shelf, they think I'm crazy.
Now for the ultimate time-honored question: who would win in a fight, cavemen or astronauts?
And the other, not so time-honored one: Spuffy or Bangel?

Re: AP Music Theory

For me, AP music theory was incredibly easy, and very enjoyable. The only formal theory training I've had was from piano lessons, band, and choir. If you know the basic stuff like you said, then that''ll be enough of a foundation for learning the new stuff fairly quickly. You'll be learning sight-se...
