Re: My Bloody Valentine

I really don't 'get' this band. Heard lots about loveless, but when I eventually got it I just found it un-listenable. It's just aural sludge to me My Bloody Valentine is like noise music on baby-mode. I suggest staying away from The Jesus and Mary Chain, and running like hell if anyone recommends ...

Re: Bands you're currently enjoying

Gang Gang Dance, a neo-tribal experimental band, and Deerhunter, an amazing shoegaze group. Deerhunter's Cryptograms has been one of my favorite albums for a while, but I picked up Microcastle recently, and I think it's quite a bit better.

I've never listened to Conlon Nancarrow, but here's a great Hauschka track with an equally awesome video.

Jane, a side project of Panda Bear from Animal Collective.
múm, an experimental electronica/post-rock band from Iceland with some freak-folk style.
Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan, a husband and wife collaboration between the lead singer for Animal Collective and the lead singer (?) for múm.

Those are some pretty obscure bands.

Haha, that's barely scratching the surface.

Blindness

I saw the 30 second trailer while watching Burn Notice on Hulu. I thought it was interesting, so I watched the full one and now I'm really excited to see it. I have to know, though, is the English translation of the novel any good? I've had bad experiences with foreign language books that I've heard...

Re: Mark Z. Danielewski

I thought it really proved the bond of love between Karen and Navidson. Explorations 1 and 4 scared the crap out of me, to the point where I was afraid of both having my eyes open, and having my eyes closed at the same time. Also, I have to sit around for five minutes to work up the courage to go to...

Re: Bands you're currently enjoying

Hauschka, Joanna Newsom, and Original Silence. The first is a, experimental composer who plays the prepared piano. The second is a "freak folk" harpist, and her album Ys is amazing. The last is a free jazz/noise group featuring Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth and Mats Gustafsson, a fantast...

Sonic Youth. For a long time I've been limited to very few of their albums: the ones I either owned ( Daydream Nation ) or was able to get from local libraries ( Rather Ripped , A Thousand Leaves and Dirty ). But I recently discovered that almost all of their songs are streamable on Last.fm , so I'...

The book made much more sense to me when I was listening to the audiobook version, so you might want to try that. The way it's read makes it more coherent than trying to figure out the structure on your own.

Re: Mark Z. Danielewski

I finished reading House for the second time recently, and I came up with a new theory about the ending. I'm thinking that Johnny Truant does not actually exist. Zampano, when writing The Navidson Record, also wrote House of Leaves. He wrote all of Johnny's footnotes. This explains how the m...

He is a former biomedical engineering turned electronic musician who makes complex mash-ups of popular and indie music. His best albums are Night Ripper and Feed the Animals, the latter of which is available for free on his site.

Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is brilliant transgressive fiction.

My name is Ameen. I am male and a freshman in high school. I spend most of my time listening to music, riding my bike, watching movies, and playing the drum set. As far as music goes, I mostly listen to noise rock and hip-hop. I like certain comics and books while I do not like other ones. Some that...
