Re: Hardest Major

I'd like to update my opinion. I've just started a med degree and while the stuff isn't conceptually that difficult there's just so MUCH. As far as workloads go it's definitely up there, I spent less time at uni during my honours project than I have in the last month and I know I'm not fully up to d...

Actually, I'd argue we do . But as seen there, morality is way too complicated to just say "X is the be all, end all, correct answer". I was more replying to Dream, I just didn't bother putting a quote in when I saw you'd posted. In any case you are right about morality. How reasonable th...

I don't think we have a major disagreement here, that's what I want to think I'd do too. Just beacuse we think it's the right thing to do doesn't mean we have any right to tell someone else what to do with their IP though.

Re: GlaxoSmithKline might not be evil....?

There are lifesaving drugs available to treat HIV. People are dying for lack of them. The absence of a cure is no reason not to treat these people and save their lives. The crisis right now is great enough that any argument from a premise of developing further cures for HIV or any other infection i...

Dream: I'd agree with your argument if we already had a cure for AIDS. I think drug companies should heavily subsidize their anti retrovirals for developing countries and some of them do. Defensible or not, discovering/creating new bioactive compounds and then getting them to the stage where they can be marketed as drugs costs a lot of money. As has already been said from the time an active compound is discovered it takes 15 years on average to get to market and the vast majority of ...

Arancaytar speaks deep wisdom, finding new bioactive compounds is hard and getting harder in some ways since a lot of the 'low hanging fruit' from natural products have been found. This isn't to say I agree with everything they do, drug companies are starting to work out what diseases they can marke...

Re: California Supreme Court: Doctors cannot bill patients

Last thing anyone needs are more taxes, but it's a reasonably good idea. The way it works over here (Aus) is that there's universal healthcare which is paid for out of income tax (not sure but off the top of my head I think it's a sliding scale based on income that tops out at about 1 or 1.5k a yea...

Re: California Supreme Court: Doctors cannot bill patients

On the one hand it's detrimental to patient health (and therefore to society as a whole, my opinion anyway) to make cost a concern in an emergency situation on the other hand making the hospitals eat the cost isn't the answer, a service is being provided here and you have to pay for that somehow. It wasn't a bad film but it was way more 'old bond' than Casino Royale. I would have liked it better if they'd kept it smaller and more personal.
