Re: 2083: "Laptop Issues"

Things Very Wrong with That Laptop - by Symptom ⋅ Laptop is killing batteries -- minor short in or very leaky cap in PSU ⋅ Files get corrupted on the first day of every month even when clean -- FS has fencepost errors in its dating system?! ⋅ Static shocks from plumbin...

Re: 2074: Airplanes and Spaceships

I've had a bit of fun pointing out in various forums that Earth is, by the current definition, not a proper "planet", since it has failed to clear its orbit of objects like that large rock called "Luna". This is sorta mirrored by the small number of astronomers who argue that th...

Re: 2077: "Heist"

Best case, if you let him in, you just earned yourself a nice long conversation with IT/security and whatever penetration testing firm they hired to explain exactly what you did wrong. Worst case, your first thought was right and now your company is bankrupt and all its customer/employee data is in ...

Re: 2073: "Kilogram"

Just in case anyone was out of the loop, this comic was inspired by a recent vote to adjust the definition of the kilogram. They're not actually changing how much a kg is, since that would be insane. They are keeping the end result but changing how you arrive at that result. I was about to post som...

Re: 2066: "Ballot Selfies"

Personally I think absentee voting should be limited to people overseas. If you're out of state, you can have a ballot mailed to you, bring it sealed to a local polling place, open it there, and have them transmit the result back to your clerks. My state is voting on no-reason absentee voting this ...

Re: 2030: "Voting Software"

MN uses the same or a very similar system. In MN the Secretary of State will also randomly hand-recount a certain percentage of precincts every year regardless of the reported outcome in any of the races. I represented a candidate in a hand-recount a few years back. I was absolutely amazed at the a...

Re: 2030: "Voting Software"

I voted on a paper ballot yesterday...and then slid that piece of paper into a scanner that detects the bubbles I filled in, looks for over/under votes (informs me of those if I want to declare my ballot spoiled and try again), tabulates the votes on a memory card, and finally stores the piece of pa...

Re: 1995: MC Hammer Age

And then it turns out he got us twice, since they're both 56. He only got me once since I already knew that MC Hammer was the same age as my mother but, I didn't know that the guy who played the Karate Kid was actually a few months older. I guess I knew he had to be older than 40 (I was bor...

Something tells me that Randall didn't actually intend to put the giant version of the comic on the page.

Well, I guess that'd be the problem with creating a comic on a subject so quickly ^_^

1585: "Similarities"

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/similarities.png Alt Text: I just came from The Martian, and I just have to say: Forget BB-8; I want a pet Sojourner! It's always been the cutest of our Mars rovers. This is one of the wonderful things about Randall's comic style, he can go see a movie and just a couple ...

Re: 1348: "Before the Internet"

Yes, I remember those days and not very fondly. During the summer while I was a kid I would have TNT's schedule of daytime shows memorized. Although, I will admit that I kept up with the local news much better when I watched TV rather than using the Internet for entertainment. I have a much better g...

Re: 1179: "ISO 8601"

As great as standards are, this is the wrong way to way to write a date. Why? because some implementations of common languages (such as JavaScript) won't parse `2013-02-26` whereas _every_ date parser will parse `2013/02/26` to today. Results are more important than standards. ISO 8601 predates Jav...

Re: 1179: "ISO 8601"

I can't find a publication date for ISO 8601:1988 th...

Re: 1179: "ISO 8601"

Some traditionalists will still insist on V Calends Mars anno conditae urbis MMDCCLXI. When I run this latin through Google Translate I get '5 years from the founding of the new moon, Mars 2761'. Is that what was meant here? I use YYYYMMDD for naming text files, saved webcomic images, etc - stuff t...
