Re: What-If 0090: "Great Tree, Great Axe"

That would be an interesting what if on it's own. It is obviously impractical to chop down a tree with crossbow bolts, but is it possible or would you end up reinforcing the tree more than damaging it after a certain point? Normal bolts wouldn't break many fibres, just pushing them apart. If you us...

Hereby signing out - two weeks Mediterranean Sea. If I find a floating Hill People Watch Tower, I'll ask the airline if they are okay with bulk good. C14 ;-) C14 Does radiocarbon dating work for future artifacts, too? If I were you, I'd be careful how you combine 'C' and '4' while on an airplane.

Re: 1190: "Time"

I can't help thinking that they have made a huge mistake by not poling towards the shore for as long as they could reach the bottom. They are now stuck without a paddle in the middle of the Mediterranean, which is not a good place to be.

Re: 1190: "Time"

Various sources show a flow rate through the strait at 300km/hr. While that is huge, it makes sense for a flow a few hundred meters high with an ocean behind it and nothing in front of it. But this, admittedly enormous, momentum runs into a humongous body of water. It would cause large currents in ...

Re: 1190: "Time"

Oh - they don't yet understand the timeframe - they still think this is about many years, not few months.

Prepare for two very shocked Cuegan, and a race to save their family!

Not that the 'people in the hills' actually live on what will become an seamount. Anyone who takes refuge there will drown!

Re: 1190: "Time"

What evidence do we have that this is the future VS evidence that this is the past? Astronomical. The proper motion of the stars is wrong for any time in the past. We can measure movements of stars. We know that, for instance, two stars are moving apart. If it was in the past, those stars would be ...

Not much. Of course, the obvious next step is to go save the Cuegan tribe, as the castle on the high mountain is roughly sea level!

Re: 1190: "Time"

I think we have another clear word - "sea' or 'lake' : Both 'your sea' and the one to the lower right have the same first word - 3'UJ, I think. Does Standard Sinus Notation make a difference between right-high-curve and high dot? P.S. Looks like we are flooding the Mediterranean basin then. By ...

Re: 1190: "Time"

My current theory is that Rosetta learned Cuelish from old documents - maybe records from our day - and said "Your language is like those spoken by the (some idiom meaning the ones from long ago)" She would therefore have a good understanding of the language, but be unsure about how it is ...

Re: 1190: "Time"

Interesting. The word for this food is very similar to the first word in the phrase for the healing paste.
The difference is that the healing paste name has a '3' in front of it, and this word has a bar over the curvy-omega.

Re: 1190: "Time"

Of course, the way to start such language-discerning is to trade names. "My name is Cueball." "My name is Megan." So either we will soon know what their names are, or GLR will keep up the pretense.

Re: 1190: "Time": Wherefore the sattelites?

Go outside in the evening and allow your eyes to fully adjust, and you will see satellites. There will be a visible satellite in the sky at any time between full sunset and maybe 9:00, and from about 3:00 until first light. Even thousands of years in the future, many of those satellites will still b...
