Re: Gamergate

Funny that I would post here again after like four years of inactivity. In this thread of all threads. Anyway. I am very confused by this whole episode and so shall ask a question for clarification - It seems as though there are two entirely separate issues at play and both sides of the argument are...

Re: Bike advice

Paranoid, if you are from the US, may I ask how you transported your bike across the pond, and how much that was (at least a estimate)? I'm not from the US, but a fairly standard method is to pack your bike into a cardboard bike box (normally free from bike shops- saves them needing to dispose of t...

Re: Life origins problem

Most people botch probability math. You are no different. The math is actually good, but the conclusion is wrong. A probability is not the number of trials required to produce the event, it is the percentage chance that any given trial will produce the desired result. Thus the first trial can resul...

Re: Life origins problem

The whole point of the experiment was to get a self replicator from nothing. I don't see why people are going on about finding different ones... I mean who cares? I'm sure there are many ways that it would work but the amazing thing would be to simply get 'life' from no life.

Re: Life origins problem

I can't really discount these points, they all seem fair and scientific. I stand corrected. Yes, one kilogram of the amino acid arginine has 2.85 x 10^24 molecules in it (that's well over a billion billion); a tonne of arginine has 2.85 x 10^27 molecules. If you took a semi-trailer load of each amin...

Re: Life origins problem

Sure, but you're just picking 10000 out of thin air. If we say that, I don't know, 1 billionth of a billionth of the combinations work, then using your same calculation, we end up with life happening spontaneously pretty much all the time, everywhere on Earth. What you choose for this number has an...

Re: Life origins problem

Thanks for the correction on the number of bases. There will only be a finite number of ways to construct an RNA molucule that will self replicate (which is below a reasonable number of bases). say there were ~10 000 different ways of constructing a self replicating RNA molucule. This would mean the...

Life origins problem

I know this topic has been discussed before but this is a differnet angle on it that is concerning me. I was reading an article about RNA and how strands have been fabricated that can duplicate other RNA molucules, thus giving credability to the hypothesis that life originated from RNA moluclues (ma...

Okay, this is making some more sense. However the traffic flow program was much, much more substantial. I ...

Re: Functions and classes

Wow thanks, that was actually really helpful! If you want to copy a report, you clone the object. If you want to do something to it, you call a method, not call a function and pass in the variables By this do you mean call a method (or function?) within the object? As in the object has functionality...

Functions and classes

I'm a physics undergrad and have been coding for a while now (MATLAB and C#), however I've never really had an occasion to use functions or classes. Re: If modern weapons didn't exist, what would combat look l

In the case of swords and other medieval weaponry you just have to look back in time; the Romans with their discipline and better equipment won against vastly greater numbers. A well coordinated/disciplined/trained and equipped force would prevail. With no guns vehicles would only really be used for...

Whoever you do get to pilot your plane needs to be a serious pro at flying model jets. At that altitude you won't be able to see the plane as 3 foot wingspan at 5000 ft won't even be a speck, so you'll have to use some kind of video relay. The problem with that is there will be a delay on the feed. ...

Well firstly cycling and running use different muscle's, so being good at cycling wont really help your running.
