Re: District Judge Selection

So, one of the questions on my county's ballot for the upcoming election deals with whether or not judges should be nominated by some commission and selected by the Governor (retention in office voted by voters) or whether they should be voted in. I had a little trouble parsing the question, but I'...

Re: Can the value of life be reduced to numberical values?

Since we seem to have so much trouble defining what value means, I'm going to go with no. Until we have a definition of value as it applies to a human life there is no way to assign value to things.

Re: Proliferation of 'soft' subjects in high school

Exactly. I don't have anything against these courses for the people who are looking for a career in them, but people are deliberately taking them instead of sciences, etc. with no intention of using the skills or even getting more than a pass in the course So you're complaining, then, not that thes...

Re: Malcom Reynolds vs Han solo

One-on-one gunfight - Depends on the circumstances. Mal's better in a pitched battle, but Han has a habit of shooting first and winning personal encounters. Actually... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BvP99-Ci6k (still a noob and so not linking) Just watch the last 8 seconds. Mal is also a shoot-fi...

Re: The Bebop's crew versus the Serenity's

In a ground war Serenity has numbers. Spike is as badass as they come, but with Jayne, Zoe, and Wash holding off against Jet and Faye, he couldn't take River, Mal, and Book. Serenity simply can't win a space war without weapons. A fistfight would be interesting. Spike could demolish anyone not named...

Re: Proliferation of 'soft' subjects in high school

Soft courses can be quite useful. Language courses in HS are usually based on reading and writing well, necessary skills for many jobs. I'd love to see more voters with a good understanding of history and government, not to mention Philosophy and Economics. Now, some may be pathetic, but those cours...

Re: Malcom Reynolds vs Han solo

I doubt that the two would ever have reason to fight, but here's my comparison of them Fistfight: Mal Spacefight: Han. As has been noted, the Falcon has weapons. I'd argue that just as important is the fact that Han flies the Falcon, while Mal is simply the captain of Serenity, so even if their ship...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hello. I am a student at Reed college who may or may not be named Thaddeus. My current track is unclear, and may run through math, philosophy, political science, or some combination of the above. I am something of a nerd (really, a nerd posting on the XKCD fora? Whoda thunk,) though I realize that m...
