Re: 1363 - "xkcd Phone"

I'd love to have the Falling Wilhelm app in the app store, but I'm afraid Apple would reject it multiple counts. In particular, Apple doesn't allow apps that encourage people to damage their phones. However, If you (or a friend) are an iPhone developer, you can build it from the GitHub repo and ins...

Re: What-If 0089: "Tungsten Countertop"

My favorite "a ha" moment here was the "thousands of kilometers" note/citation. I think we need to start using SI prefixes for our larger numbers. How far is it from the earth to the sun? Wiki says 1.496 x 10 8 . Instead, it should be 149.6 megameters, or 0.1496 gigameters. How f...

Re: 1319: "Automation"

I think Randall's second graph is incorrect. Let me explain. As you get into the "no time for original task anymore (sic)" section, the work should go DOWN, since you are working on it less -- turning it into the same type of "long tail"-type graph that he shows in the upper &quo...

Re: What-If 0058: "Orbital Speed"

The confusing part to me is that the ISS is feeling 90% of the gravity at the Earth's surface. However, we see that the astronauts feel weightless. Is this due to their sideways movement? And, if so, why don't they keep accelerating until they start really falling into the Earth? Are they "losi...

I'm not naming names here... but SOMEbody oughta be putting a "50000th post" cake in the oven about now.... I also was thinking about "views per post" and this thread is *WAY* low, only about 27 views per post. Must be a lot of people (guilty!) that jump to the end because it is...

The Chanur series by C J Cherryh. Anything by Cherryh. Also, although it is not a series, all the books are set in the same universe: the Discworld books by Prachett. I just wanted to jump in on the book recommendations. You lead off by asking for things to follow Pern, so I'm assuming you like mor...

Re: 1190: "Time"

The fence reminds me of split rail, but with chicken wire, or wire mesh, on one side. Like this: http://locustfence.com/img3.jpg Well-spotted! Someone earlier suggested barbed wire, but I would judge that the rails are far too thick for that. But a heavy mesh fence, zoomed out to invisibility, migh...

[smcaps]Typing in all caps seems ... hard. Especially when there are lots of punctuation (comma, semicolon, hypenated-words, etc.). Isn't there a BBcode for that? Maybe smcaps or some such code?[/smcaps]

PS: YES, I DID A PREVIEW AND KNOW MY PREVIOUS TEXT WAS NOT CAPITALIZED.

Re: 1190: "Time"

<snip'd> So the difference between man and woman is a mere "ly". So much for this Mars-&-Venus gibberish. No, the difference between man and woman is "wo" -- or, to put it in a story form: In Biblical times, God presented everything to man to name. After all the animals, God...

Re: 1190: "Time"

Quickly, there's not much time! I am posting this from the far future (the conversion to your archaic time frame eludes me at the moment, but it is currently 152 years after (all hail Lord) Randall started the One True Comic), and (all hail Lord) Randall's ancestors are STILL drawing the OTC series....

Re: 1190: "Time"

Are there genuinely less Waiters now than ever? I kind of doubt its a serious problem. It is the end of the school year, so that accounts for some of us. If there's ever a serious decline, some of us may have to become missionaries to other, godless websites. :P I'm sure there are less Waiters, but...

Re: 1190: "Time"

Right on, Arky! A bit more accurate Panorama, with the zoomout of just that tree canopy frame, not the other way around. Without that frame there's a gap (which you can see if you look for the fuzz). Thanks for that, azule. These kinds of panoramas really make me appreciate how much ground Randall ...

Re: 1190: "Time"

After more than 20k posts, one could think we could be closer to understanding what is really going on in this comic (best way to guess at what it is we are waiting for). As far as I've seen by lurking around here, there are lots of scattered theories which are not always diverging. Blitzgirl and o...

Re: 1190: "Time"

For those that have looked at the .js file, have you tried to change your url to dump out debugging messages? Add: /#verbose to the xkcd [dot] com URL, and it dumps messages to the console. Things like: [13:57:00.578] waiting 4 seconds before displaying comic c2e1cc28a59b7184d3c3306a655d048669963412...
