I've been using Eclipse for bigger projects and Kate for some smaller assignments.
That's for C/C++, not for PHP. (don't know if either has code coloring etc for it)

While I have no experience with Alice, it's my opinion that it doesn't matter too much which language you get in your first year. It's of more practical use if you get a recent, usable, programming language like Java, C++ or even C#, but the fundamentals of most OOP languages are the same. Also Alic...
