Don't worry about using dyndns.org, most scanners use IP addresses directly. You will likely need to port forward any VPN ports you are using. I'm not familiar with the Cisco VPN client and what it will talk to (I suspect only Cisco routers). You might be better off installing a different VPN client...

First things that leap to mind are: faultly hardware (bad connection somewhere) and overheating. First thing I'd do is clean the dust out (could cause airflow problems or intermittent shorting).

It almost sounds like your DNS port is firewalled off somehow, either on the machine in question or your router. You said that you can do DNS lookups for other sites from the 10.0.1.5 machine?

What does your /etc/resolv.conf file look like?

It almost looks like 10.0.1.1 can't find you. Can you ping it?

And what's with the 'activate.adobe.com' gateway on the loopback device?

I'm not sure if you need the fe80::1%lo0 entry in your hosts file, either. You might try commenting that out. (Standard IPv6 loopback is ::1.)

What does your routing table look like? It does sound like you don't have a default route and that hotaru's suggestion might help (if, indeed, 10.0.1.1 is your router).
