Re: 1569: "Magic Tree"

I don't think that is convergent evolution, where different groups develop similar adaptations in response to similar evolutionary pressures. It would be a type of mutual defensive mimicry, where each one models the other to avoid different threats. Agreed. An example of convergent evolution would ...

Re: 1521: “Sword in the Stone”

Driven by (somewhat rudimentary) education I'd like to correct "England" to "Britain". Well, even if your only education was the Monty Python film, you might remember "Arthur, King of the Britons". My understanding is that the British (or Celtic) peoples were an assort...

I guess the idea is that it's a child's spelling. Btw, the S isn't the only problem...correct spelling is (surprisingly) cemetery.

Also, seems like a good opportunity to point out that Randall misspelt "desiccated" in a recent comic.

This is pleasing to me. I'm reminded of a similar gag from one of the great British comedy shows:

OK, now I want a picture of the night sky that somehow (colour scale?) shows how many light years away each star is. Rather over-optimistically, I had hoped the mouseover text would show me that :(

Re: 1321: "Cold"

It's amazing how often this idea comes up, that a local cold snap disproves global warming. Actually, the emails admitting they are rigging the data pretty much confirmed it for me. Seriously, from a scientific point of view, starting with a premise (Man causes global warming) and rejecting all dat...

Re: 1321: "Cold"

The argument is to climatology (and maths) as "if man came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" is to biology. Humans didn't come from monkeys . Humans are apes . I'm not sure it's good practice to correct someone's example of something that is wrong. Actually, it's an example of a...

Re: 1299: "I Don't Own a TV"

Here in the UK we have our own special brand of smugness for people who have a tv, but no tv licence. For those who don't understand the system (including most people in the uk, actually) the licence is required for the receiving of broadcast tv signals in real-time, whether it's to watch something ...

So here's a question for C/C++/etc coders. Have you ever taken a brief break from work to send a personal email, and then received an bemused reply asking why the hell all of your sentences are terminated with semicolons?

Thanks - it would take some patience to work out why the colours were different to a normal SAVE, and also why it doesn't seem to return of its own accord (even if it were saving all of ROM and RAM, you'd think it would finish eventually). I can't remember whether USR made any commitment about the ...

I'm glad you spotted my deliberate mistake. Returning the accumulator would have only allowed an 8-bit result, so returning BC was more useful. Perhaps you or time burglar can explain RANDOMIZE USR 1331? It would flash the border making it go stripy, a bit like when a file was loading (but in diffe...

Re: 1275: "int(pi)"

This reminded me of the techniques used on the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum, where "1" was often replaced by PI/PI and "0" by PI-PI. The BASIC programs were tokenized on entry and stored in tokenized form. Numeric literals were stored as an escape byte followed by four bytes of floating...

It's such an important and thrilling moment, but I found it almost indecipherable in the original 2d, binary-coloured form. T...

Ooh I have a pertinent fact. Well, I hope it's a fact, and I didn't dream it. Baobabs aren't naturally found isolated like this. You'd normally expect to see them surrounded by other forest, presumably of similar height. So what these iconic images are really showing us is dramatic, almost total def...

Hello brothers and sisters.

I thought this would be a good time to join, as events are clearly just starting to warm up. I was also roused into action by the post 2^14 milestone. I hope I will not offend any customs.
