On chess and parties: There is a variation of chess called The Philosopher's Chess. I believe they play it quite a bit in the Philosophy department in Aarhus, Denmark, hence its name. The rules are simple: You drink while you think. As for my advice to people: Always make the decision you will regre...

Re: Radical Feminism

Going by the usual ideas of what masculinity entails, namely strength, dominance, assertiveness, I'm pretty sure you just said that all women should be weak, submissive and demure. (Now, you could mean something else, but I would be shocked, surprised and bewildered) Now, I am a 25-year old white du...

It's worth noting that occupy did in fact give out food to the poor until the police had sent so many their way that it stopped being feasible. It's also worth noting that occupy was much more loosely organised that the te party, at least in part from neccesity, although ideology had a lot to do wit...

Am I the only one here who is more than a little tired of the idea that taxes are theft in any meaningful way? If we use such simplistic terms, then forcibly admitting the psychotically insane is also kidnapping (and so is arrest) - pretending that a few superficial similarities means that the two a...

Re: "The __ word"

Being a 'dick' is not an insult to your gender, but being 'a cunt' is. For a woman to be dismissed as "just a cunt", means that she is unworthy due to her being a woman, whereas someone being dismissed as "just a dick" means that they're probably, well, a jerk. I'm not sure that ...

Re: "The __ word"

I'd suggest that getting off on calling women cunts (or being called a cunt) in an erotic context is fun exactly because it's taboo, which was my point - women can enjoy being demeaned, and men can enjoy demeaning (in play). Maybe I like being called 'cunt', though--maybe that's what turns my crank...

@The Great Hippo: I'm not sure people are just able to override their cultures like that. Sure, we can imagine a wordgame in which we give words entirely new meaning, but I think that such a game would probably be tinged in various ways - just like 'ironic' racism is usually not that ironic when it ...

Re: "The __ word"

I'd argue that communication always takes place in a cultural context, and for some words, the taboo is so heavy that we shouldn't say them in that cultural context - in fact, to do so is both crude and inconsiderate, and in the case of the n-word, inherently offensive (again, within that culture). ...

I think the main lesson of the icelandic system is that capitalist anarchies are really, really vulnerable to monopolies (in the case of Iceland, it was the Church).
