Re: 2149: "Alternate Histories"

As I recall there were several other Republicans in the running to become VP to Ford besides Bob Dole, and who might have become VP to Dole. One of them was a Hollywood hack who’d been elected Governor of California. I wonder what ever happened to him? Which one? We’ve had two Hollywood hacks who h...

Re: Life in one dimension

Let's analyze this for a moment. First of all, since forcefields would not spread out with distance, then there would be no decrease of attraction/repulsion of electromagnetism and gravity with increasing distance. This would mean that there would be no such thing as escape velocity--no finite amoun...

Even if distance does not exist in the traditional sense, there is still a need for a parameter that governs the strength of the fundamental forces/interactions between particles, which we at present represent by stating that force varies with separation.

Given the accelerations exerted upon the SSD by its own propulsion systems, it certainly has enough inertial dampers or whatever to allow it to endure something like a hundred g’s. Tidal accelerations from a normal-density object such as a planet will be much less than that.

Given that the black holes would be passing each other at extreme speed (i.e. high Lorentz factor), there is likely to be some severe frame dragging involved as well.

Due to General Relatively stuff, the radius of a black hole’s event horizon increases in linear proportion to its mass as opposed to the cube root of its mass (as applies to ordinary “solid” matter that is not under compression). Re: How do Maxwell's equations predict the speed of light?

Electromagnetic fields (and therefore, also waves) propagate at finite speed because the permeability and permittivity of vacuum (i.e. empty space’s resistance to the fields) are themselves finite. This is a good thing, because if empty space had zero resistance to electromagnetic fields, then space...

The usual standard for whether an execution method is “cruel and unusual” is whether it is worse than execution by firearm/firing squad. If it’s worse than bring shot with bullets, then one can srgue that it is deliberately cruel.
