Re: Ask an English teacher!

What would you suggest that a student do to cope with a "bad" teacher, like those described by others? The sort who doesn't want to hear alternative views &c., the sort who gets trapped in a job he isn't particularly prepared to do or in which he has little interest. Should a student j...

Re: Paper!

College! I like having really densely-spaced information, and wide-ruled is too big... I've been known to have two lines of notes within one line of ruling. (For the biochem unit, I managed three; by the end of the paper, my doodles were more expansive than my notes.) For some reason, when my handwr...

Re: Little editing/grammar mistakes that drive you up the wall

To continue Whitney's 80 GB iPod complaint... "A * denotes a required course" should be "An * denotes...", as one would write "An asterisk denotes...". My school's curriculum guide had this all over. And then there are the people who mis-capitalise GB, iPod, &c. Thi...

Re: I think that my teacher is wrong...

Yes, I'm aware that it's used as a plural here, and apostrophes are alright for symbols and such.
However, the main point of his argument is that the "1950's" phrase was possessive, and thus required the apostrophe.

I think that my teacher is wrong...

On the first day of school Mr English Teacher presented to his class sentences with grammar errors that the students had to correct, and then he'd explain all of the corrections. I'm not sure if he's correct on this: "I enjoy cars from the 1950's and 1960's". This is his corrected form. I ...

Re: "Tech Support Cheat Sheet" Discussion

At the radio station at which I volunteer, they have Winamp in a perfectly-set, default way. Someone clicked the box that pops up to update the program, and that changed the skin, thus confusing everyone and they wanted it back in its basic form, because that worked best. Well, the computer was out ...

Re: Stupid classmates

The whole "learning from each other" thing isn't that bad. My friends and I just talked and we always got what we were learning. Except there's a point when that is detrimental; almost the entirety of my AP Chem class did that, and their excessive talking slowed the class down. About half...

Re: What kind of voice do you hear in your head when you read?

If I'm reading a dry nonfiction or plain text, it'll generally be a quicker, lighter variation of my own voice or a generic male voice with a British accent. First-person narrators and third-person characters get assigned random voices that I think appropriate (which all goes into the cinematic expe...

Re: How do you buy your music?

I have an obsession with completeness, and compulsively need complete discographies of audio releases (Like Xaiv, but with the singles; B-sides are often favourites). Pirating exists, and why not take advantage of one's resources? I purchase discs on occassion, because it is always nice to have loss...

Sodas (Dew is best, Monster for those horrid midday nap attacks, and anything else for variety; Dr. Pepper, ginger ale, Coke). Maybe pure coffee or tea when carbonation is undesired. Drink desired drink until calorie content satisfies hunger. Um... solid food? Like, proper sustenance? Anything with ...

Re: What Media Player (software) Do you use?

I use iTunes 'cause I had to choose between it or Windows Media Player. Winamp, when I was looking for a player, didn't have Unicode support, which is a must with my largely-Japanese collection. I preferred iTunes' simple layout (very nice for viewing many, many songs), but now it likes to do weird ...

"Totally", regardless of by whom or in what context it is being used. No reason why I hate it, but I just use "wholly" or "completely" instead. I also dislike "die Speise", because it seems to be the only German word with a spelling that I cannot remember. Spi...

I had been sleeping, until the school sent out an automated call to say, "Hey, you guys, don't bother. Thar be snow". Now I can't return to sleep  I get 8~9 hours of sleep (consistantly, for months ni a row), but still manage, against all means, to fall asleep in my post-lunch classes...

Re: One space or two?

I use two spaces, and I use both of them because I happen to like them. Due to the white space above the period, it can be difficult to distinguish on the fly whether there is one space or two. Typing, to me, is a cross between strict, formal writing/typewriter-typing and fluid speech. When I'm writ...

If I was to come across the 'even spaced out single black tile' setup, I would extend lines out from the black tiles, where I can step inside the black tiles, inside the line of tiles, or completely out of line with the tiles, as long as I don't step on the lines I've created in my mind. I could ha...

If I could count all the times I wanted to choke a school teacher for giving me extra credit for coloring... Once in PreAP Bio (honours course, nothing to do with real AP Bio. I just took it for the required credit.) I failed my homework simply because I didn't colour in a graph, even though the da...
