I don't think you have any right to hate on Rocky Horror if you can't spell "kitschy," Mr. Munroe.

I'm more of a "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!" listener, but it's another well-played comic. The alt-text sentence doesn't read so smoothly, though. Same. Also on Saturdays, KPBS produces a show called "A Way With Words," which discusses etymology, grammar, American slang, and the ...

Re: "The Race: Part 5" Discussion

Whatever guys, this series of strips is just a thinly veiled attempt for Randall Munroe to have an electric skateboard race with Nathan Fillion at this year's Comic Con. Though I only have anecdotal evidence, Fillion is known to be gracious towards his fans, and putting out the strip now gives him e...

They are nouns. The difference in nouns isn't how specific they are, it weather thier target is independant of context or not. "person" is a noun and is vaguer then "he" or "she". However without a context we know what a person is. We don't know to what he or she reffe...

I think the worst I've been called (as a term of affection by strangers) is Sugar, which *always* gets shortened to Sug. I mean, what? I hate that. My name is not Sug. See, "Sugar" shortened to "Sug" reminds me of Rogue from the X-Men cartoons, so I give that one a pass (though ...

Re: Woman Thread - Holds 5% more blue liquid than other brands!

The first time someone called me ma'am (a bagger at the grocery store) I was so surprised that I blurted out "How old do you think I am?!" (I was 20). I felt a little bad for saying that, though, he blushed and just sort of stammered. I worked a register when I was 16 and I got called ma'...

Re: Prepping for ACT/SAT

Ah, now I see what you are driving at a little better. If you are scoring so well that you consistently get between a 780 and an 800, then yes, there is probably very little as a tutor that I can do that a student couldn't do on their own. However, if you consistently are scoring this high, you prob...

A few more tips: -For reading comprehension, in the sections with passages, underline. It will help you to concentrate and consciously make note of the key points in the passage. From my practice tests, pre-underline: 710-ish. On the actual SAT, with underlining: 800. And I sure as hell didn't get ...

Re: Prepping for ACT/SAT

When it comes to taking standardized tests in general, however, I fall into your school of thought; SAT- and ACT-level math is very simple stuff, and there simply isn't a good reason to write every single problem down when you're unlikely to make an error (and insuring you did not make an error is ...

@Pit It seems to me you are conflating the writing and the reading sections, and I don't know why you would do such a thing. Also, I'm not sure where these 250 points are coming from, as 25% of 800 =/= 250 (but hey, maybe you did that math in your head, right?). All snarkiness aside, however, I thin...

Re: Prepping for ACT/SAT

For the SAT essay, to quote Dr. Les Perelman, English professor at MIT, "I would advise writing as long as possible, and include lots of facts, even if they're made up." The SAT essay is graded mostly on two criteria: Whether or not you're on topic, and essay length. If you fill up the tw...

Isn't anyone else bothered by the notion of SAT prep courses? They advertise that they just teach to a test. They're a way of gaming the system that you have to pay for; consequently they bias the system in favor of wealthier college applicants. From the individual student's perspective, I'm sure t...
