Re: 1343: "Manuals"

Every tool needs a manual. No matter how simple there is a way to do it better, faster, more efficiently, or with reduced wear to the tool itself. Even if it's a hammer there is a best way to swing it, guidelines for what you probably shouldn't do with it, and common situations where you would likel...

That horribly misaligned the plates on my press.

In reciprocity I would request that you work it to the degree of approx. 800 kJ.

I still count it as a problem that both maps show a significant number of stations that are not underground or do no go underground for a tremendous distance having turned into streetcars either with or without grade separation. I can mainly only speak to SF, but BART is only underground for a small...

Just because they don't charge for the service doesn't mean that they aren't a business and that there shouldn't be an expectation of properly managing your assets. Many banks have free checking accounts and nobody would claim that they aren't businesses because of it. Nor would it be considered rea...

What is the slowest growing religion? Again, this is subject to many of the same problems of "fastest-growing", but probably the Shakers. At their peak there were only ever 6,000 of them and at present there are only 5. I would claim that negative growth as they rapidly approach extinctio...

Pshaw... who would be interested in some lame, trendy new faith. I've been really into Mandaeism since, like, forever. It's pretty small though, you probably haven't heard of it. The early stuff was really better, back before Mani went solo and totally sold out with that popular crap. The only probl...

Does he come running to see if someone's making a dubious criticism of the plural form "octopi"? Based on what we've seen of the character so far, I'd say he comes running whenever someone uses the plural form octopi. This sounds like a job for Anthropology Man! But it might take a bit of...

My dorm had small, carrel-sized study rooms in the basement that were more or less exclusively used for sex. You had to check out a key for them individually as well so privacy was assured. At the same time... they were more or less exclusively used for sex . I would assume you'd need to be rather d...

Every time I see a US college dorm on TV I wonder whether people really still share rooms over there. I guess now I have an excuse to ask. (The hall of residence I stayed at as an undergrad did have a few shared rooms, but that was very much the exception rather than the rule.) Eh, I had my roommat...

I must be unique in not wanting to fly. It just strikes me as about the most frightening, horrifying thing ever. Flying in a plane? OK, I have no problem there. It's very safe, nicely enclosed, nothing to worry about. Flying by myself? Tenuously soaring as gravity tries its best to smash me into the...

This is why it's so important to do what you love -- you'll never work a day in your life. The problem with this is how quickly it turns into you hating the thing you love to do. You'll spend hours and hours on a hobby because you choose to do it and enjoy the time you put in. The problem occurs th...

Bonus points to anyone who actually knows the source of said concept. Episode 1.07 of Twin Peaks - Audrey's "audition" as a hostess at One Eyed Jacks (unless David Lynch pinched the idea from somewhere else). No. It is an incredibly widespread behavior that has origins long, long before T...

I think the above gives the first film, awesome though it may be, too much credit. It's strongly implied throughout the first film by Agent Smith, who at the time has no reason to lie, that the Matrix is simply a simulation of "your world" before it became "our world." The reaso...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welt_am_Draht Which I personally think is the better film, despite it's lack of fancy graphics - and definitely the more visionary one I'd also mention Dark City as an earlier and superior but similar film, but it's not exactly sci-fi. But hey, I don't think The Matrix ...

I know this has become an ironic catchphrase here, but NOT COOL, NOT FUNNY, NOT A GOOD COMIC. The phrase was originally used on the Achewood forums as a response to a strip there where someone was overly sensitive and got their panties in a twist. It's a popular phrase there. AFAIK it was populariz...

On the other hand, I find the Kindle very, very creepy. Part of reading a book is getting to read the book ... to have the physical copy in your hands, to turn the pages, and smell the print and the paper and to thoroughly wreck the cover through many rereadings. That isn't really the issue for me....

Edinburgh Castle sounds great, but we should go on quiz night. It won't be fair to unleash the power of an XKCD team, but I think it is the sort of thing that will most definitely work. It's been too long since I've been a regular at a decent quiz night. Not to mention too many of these dull ones wh...

Charts and such are far too unnecessary. Like most things in the world there is a simple formula for this that properly describes it: French, Fondle, Finger, Fuck. Sure there's plenty of space in between, but it adequately describes the general level of sexual involvement and it's simple to remember...
