Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

[science] relies on the possibility of truth and the existence of an objective physical universe. I don't think it relies on "the possibility of truth"; I do recognize it relies on an assumption of the existence of an objective universe, however I would argue that is a *necessary* assumpt...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

Interesting discussion, here, regarding the philosophy of science. I suppose I may as well weigh in. Science has its philosophical foundations, and these foundations are important and relevant to modern science. Historically, science emerged as a branch of philosophy, before the modern barriers betw...

YES! YES!
Oh, boy. Is this true about F? I still have this game -- I remember playing this as a little kid (I'm nineteen, if you're wondering), and that monster used to freak the hell out of me! What about other games of that era? Chip's Challenge, anyone?

I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to be that she decides that she will donate her organs, actually. You'll notice that both checks and Xs indicate an affirmation of that statement, and only a blank in such a form will compute to an answer of "no". She made a sloppy X to indicate that she ...

Hahaha, I L'd O L. Also, the nudity is great! Not for, shall we say, any carnal reason, but because I get tired of how nudity is treated in North American society. It's a nipple on a female (interesting how male nipples are okay, though): we all know what it looks like and where it is. Can we as a s...

That scenario annoys me so much. Why are these people talking about such meaningless, shallow things? If you have a problem with something, talk to them about it, not to me ! What are we, in high school? Instead of zoning out and thinking about math, maybe he could've suggested that there are better...

Re: "Mission To Culture" Discussion

I'm disappointed that "The Symphony" is culture but other kinds of music are not. If you're arguing that one culture is more valid or worthwhile than another, you are on seriously dangerous ground. I dunno, I read it as an issue of listening to only techno (panel 2). i.e. She's uncultured...

My god. It's the 600th topic. Let's bask in the glory of arbitrary numbers that look nice in our counting system. This comic struck a chord with me even though I'm perma-single. I can totally see myself doing this. I've done it with gadgets. Ben Loka reference? I can't really make much comment on t...

This comic is so, so much win. But looking at this thread depressed me quite a bit. If I elaborate I may offend a bunch of people, though... But it's like a mix of the alt text of this comic and the general body of this comic . I think that when it comes down to it, I'm a nerd, and love nerds -- but...

Apparently one of my profs once said to one of my friends,

My friend didn't give any context.

All you nerds just talk about vi and dvorak, nothing about the last panels! Some of you don't have emotions programmed into you I guess. Many people have difficulties dealing with uncomfortable truths. The last two panels had an uncomfortable truth so tremendous, it could not have been contained in...

Every time I hear about a Manhattan Project book, I can't help but think of Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, which is sort of the antithesis of such books. I'll definitely look your book up, though. It looks very interesting.

The Never-Ending Stories (Dickens, Tolstoy, etc)

I began The Pickwick Papers a full six years ago, and never finished it. I began War & Peace two years ago, and never finished it. I'm not generally one of those people who can never finish a book, but those two were so long that life got in the way and they were swept by the wayside. I really e...
