Re: 2126: "Google Trends Maps"

Re: 1999: "Selection Effect"

While only a small number of people who agree to the experiment will later change their mind and call the police, an even smaller percentage of the overall population will ever be in the lab at all, willingly or not. Hence I doubt the conclusion of this study.

Re: 1364 - "Like I'm Five"

How much math is in a ton of math? If it's stored on 64GB MicroSD cards weighing 2g each... it's somewhere in the order of "all the math". You should say "all known math", as I'm quite sure we have not yet been able to measure how much math we have yet to discover. I think it ma...

Re: 1215: Insight

Maybe before we rush to adopt pithy sentences from XKCD, we should stop to consider the consequences of blithely giving this comic such a central position in our lives.

From that point on he did that with almost every problem. When asked about it his answer was "I'm sure one of your classmates can explain it to you" Having a TA who can't teach is bad. Having a TA who won't try is worse. Did you talk to your professor about the fact that one of his TAs wa...

Re: What-if 0034: Twitter

I don't like how Randall kind of stops acknowledging the existence of languages other than English when he starts with the information theory thing. He only has calculated the amount of possible English tweets. Randall was answering the question asked, which was "How many unique English tweets...

Today's "What-If" reminded me of this paper discussing what quantum mechanics has to say about the maximum amount of memory and computing power that can be contained in a 1 kg / 1 L computer, including one which has been compressed into a black hole: http://arxiv.org/pdf/quant-ph/9908043.pdf

After we finish fine tuning the rotation of the Earth, I'd like to work on adjusting the curvature of the universe, or at least our local patch of it, to make PI exactly 3.14175

Re: 1099: "Tuesdays"

they seem to avoid this kind of confusion in the UK by simply stating "free refills" or "all you can eat" rather than coming up with silly titles like "bottomless drinks" or "endless wings" What happens if you go to an "all you can eat" restaurant a...

Re: "Mission To Culture" Discussion

Straight afterwards we went to a hard-house/techno night, so naturally we turned up to the opera in raverwear Why is that natural? Why not turn up to the rave in operawear? I'm not sure if you were trying to imply that the people at the opera were snooty, but would the people at the rave been more ...
