Re: 1357: "Free Speech"

But what about the next big civil liberties issue? You don't know what it's going to be. It might not even have anything to do with sexual orientation or race. If you can't make your own policy of tolerance universal, what's to say that the bigot of the future won't be You yourself? Sam, you're tal...

Re: 1357: "Free Speech"

I'll add that you aren't obligated to purchase health care in the US. You're perfectly entitled to pay a fine instead. And the law is very, very clear that if one goes that route, they remain uninsured. Oh come now. If you're going to say "You don't have to do X, you can just accept the punish...

In terms of annoyance, none of that holds a candle to CSS attributes that have to be browser-specific. *cough* IE *cough*. Sorry Randall, you've been out-trolled by Microsoft.

That's too sad, abandoning the robot on Mars. We need to go back to dogs and monkeys.

It brings to mind Stephen Covey: "All things are created twice. There's a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation of all things."

Wow, I was so enjoying the charts that I didn't even expect a joke. And then it killed me, because Primer is a favorite of mine.

Awesome comic.

Re: Geocities redesign discussion

This was superb. I actually didn't know Geocities was shutting down - I still use an @geocities.com email address, from back way before Yahoo bought them. Now I should be bothered to wonder if they'll be getting clumsy with the domain name and screw up my mail somehow, but instead all I can do is gi...

Re: "Psychic" Discussion

The way you ask a question can subtly push people toward a particular answer. Magicians call this a "mental force." Derren Brown uses this very effectively, narrowing the subject down while making it seem like he's broadening the scope. I'm going by memory, but he says things like "In...

That's not what everyone on a train is thinking. Have you been to http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/ ? That's what everyone on the train is thinking.

(Warning: Reading that site can potentially lead to a TVTropes level of immersion.

I must be odd then, because I've known of TVTropes for years and never been able to read to the bottom of a full page. (Let alone been entranced to keep following links.) It's all references to stuff I've never heard of and cute names for things that don't need cute names. The internet in general is...

Last night I was out at midnight, but had a few minutes and figured I'd check out the new xkcd strip on my new phone's web browser. I loaded up (in zoom mode to read) and the first panel filled the screen. Of course I couldn't make any sense of it. I zoomed in a little bit, out a little bit, but eit...

What if instead of attaching a helium tank, (which would be a bit unweildy), they build a device for hydrolysis. The shark's underwater anyway, so just split off some Hydrogen. That has the benefit of being less dense as well, for greater buoyancy. Of course then we have battery issues...

1. Randal made Nathan Fillion look like a total douche. But then again, maybe he is, I don't know. Really? I thought the strip did a pretty good job of showing his humorous side. The guy has an enormous and varied sense of humor, this is just like him. Absolutely. Randal is depicting Nate portrayin...

I'm happy if they just put them side by side with the correct terms. Too many won't even mention both in the same story. And I think visually it shows better this way. But auditorily you can get people to recognize Billion vs Million. Where if you say "One hundred sixty-five millon" and &q...

Given what we know about the area of a Sierpinski Triangle, I'm trying hard not to take away a meaning like "Love ultimately leaves you empty."

OK, I'm not trying that hard.
