It's mostly a matter of willpower, I think, and deadlines. My level of productivity generally goes up exponentially near a deadline. Soreness is good in that it's a sign that you've stressed your muscles (which is ideal for improvement in strength training/exercise). Extreme soreness is probably DOMS, which -as others mentioned- will decrease as you workout more often. Once you let your muscles fully recover, your body will adapt...
