Tau is 360 degrees. Tau/360 (tau/36/10) is 1 degree. Nearly tau/360 is nearly a degree. I don't want to come off as being overly blunt or harsh but...yes? 6 is a reasonable approximation to tau if you don't need too much accuracy, and 1/60 radians is a reasonable approximation for a degree in the sa...

Re: A topic in which I expound my prodigious ignorance of polyamory. Posted 20 Jan 2018, 19:18 by CorruptUser

The whole premise of "not enough women to go around" is tantamount to saying "polyamory gives women too many choices" and implies "women will have to be in a relationship with me because there will be no other choice" so like, if that's the hill you wanna die on I won't...

Re: Are Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Austro-Nesian related?

Even beyond the excellent points given by eSOANEM, look at the proposed timelines for both language families. PIE looks to have been in its original homeland around 6000 years ago, and our best bet is that that homeland was somewhere around the north end of the Black Sea. At the same time, 6000 year...

Re: Regional Dialect and Idiolect Oddities (pronunciation)

I don't know if the merger was complete, but I have little doubt that there would be some socially conditioned interplay here given the stigma surrounding the accent and also that language often has a sort of in-group/out-group variation to it.

Sure, so: Around the turn of the 20th century, the variety of New York accent that also existed in New Jersey had undergone a curl-coil merger. The r-coloured /ɜːr/ vowel sound in J er sey was pronounced instead as the diphthong /əɪ/, which doesn't really exist in a lot of other varieties of English...
