Re: 1909:"Digital Resource Lifespan"

And why does Randall think that the PDF format will be eternal? I'm pretty sure he's just saying they currently still work, not that anything listed there will necessarily be eternal. I was interpreting his right-facing arrow to mean "forever into the future" as he implied with books and ...

(Practice not visualizing, practice not thinking about in detail. Thinking of thoughts without thinking the thoughts (or at least, without being aware of thinking the thoughts), etc.) Now don't think about an elephant I did (not think about an elephant). Yeah, I thought the word 'elephant' (obvious...

Re: What-If 0114: "Antimatter"

So Venus is antimatter!? That would make for a great Sci-Fi plot - A decade ago, nobody knew why Venus was the boiling hell it was. Astronomers built models, physicists ran simulations, engineers devoted entire supercomputers to the research. It seemed impossible - the distance from the sun, the ma...

Awesome Student Quotes

I saw the "Awesome Teacher Quotes" thread, and was surprised by the (hopeful) lack of its counterpart. Awesome students are admittedly less common than awesome teachers, but it's worth a try, right? Well, here's a conversation that happened today. Student : Ms Ng, what are we these groups ...

Oooh! Colors!

I think it's been a while since there was any color in xkcd comics.

"So, where's the punchline?" Or is it just me who's expecting a joke* when someone starts talking about an Alice-and-Bob scenario? *perhaps an awful pun about Eve crypling Alice and Bob after finding out their secrets or something along those lines. The joke is that a computer scientist w...

Re: Opera, Chrome, Firefox, OR?

though lately there seems to have been an insurgence of complete incompetency in web programming, because it seems every site i go to nowadays insists on having 90% of my cpu usage. and that's in firefox, safari, etc. not all of that is incompetence... i've actually set up a few pages to borrow som...

Re: Is Java is a bad language for beginners?

Confession: Do you really need a class to print "Hello World"? Never knew that. Below is my programming career/history: 1. Actionscript (Adobe/Macromedia Flash) 2. C (in Anjuata) 3. Unityscript (Unity, duh?...) 4. Back to C 5. Java/xml (Android Programming) Personally, I've despised progra...

Re: 1196: "Oort Cloud"

Will there not be any other comets in the next few years? Will comets stop coming from the Oort cloud? Are there all that many people who only know what the Oort cloud is because of this one latest comet, who read xkcd and who will forget that's where comets come from in a couple years? The point o...

Re: 0421: "Making Hash Browns"

Am I the only one who interprets this as the guy with a racket hitting a potato into a plate, flattening it and dousing it with oil (the previously assumed orange juice)? The hash browns I've tried are KFC and McDonald ones, and they seem to fit the description of a flattened, oily, fried potato.

I subconsciously mental-hilight text when reading physical words, but instead of making them symmetrical I try to make them have equal "diameter" ( I know that's not what it's called) like this: BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BL AH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. BLAH...

(Side thought on a related topic: everything that's not generally considered "food" is described as tasting like chicken. Iguana? Tastes like chicken. Capybara? Tastes like chicken. Tasmanian devil? Kind of like chicken, but chewier. Maybe that's the flavor of things we're not supposed to...
