questions about mold

I'm learning bio over the summer and I started reading about fungi and molds. If I'm understanding this right molds generally invade an organic substance like bread and digest it externally and then absorb the nutrients. I'm also under the impression that by the time you see mold as fuzzy clumps the...

Re: Academics vs Campus Culture

Firstly, I should say that I am interested in double major in Computer Science and another science (likely Biology but also perhaps Math or Physics). You know the 'ratio' is a CS, physics, or math class is pretty bad right? If the ratio is a big concern for you, I reccomnd biology. I also suggest y...

Re: Alternative Highschool Switch: Screwing Myself Over?

I don't know much about magnet schools, but it sounds like a great deal. I would just make sure that you take a few AP tests, score well on the SAT, and write your essay about how much you liked learning and tell them the cool things you did in school. My experience is that the American education sy...

Re: Artifical gravity

What if gravity is just acceleration? Maybe we just aren't modeling our frame of reference properly to see it as such.

Re: What do other countries teach about The united states?

the question isn't always what other countries teach about us, but what we teach other countries about our selves. I knew a Japanese student in Germany. She had the option to study in the Uk or the US for her year abroad. She chose the UK because her American English teach portrayed America as a ter...

Re: Getting fit tips for 14 year olds.

If you can join the wrestling or crew team at your high school. These sports will take fat off fast. As far as everything else goes most of the advice here is pretty good. Stick to body weight excercises and don't rush things. Push ups, pull ups, and dips will cover pretty much everything for your u...

Re: Swimming: its not just good for escaping Raptors anymore!

I swum on and off for years. At one point I was on a swim team. The first 2 weeks suck. They always suck. You are reworking all your streamlining, strengthening, and building up your conditioning. I'm not an advocate of just swimming distance until you stop. You get a much better work out using time...

Re: Roommates for College

Just go with the random room mate. You're not going to predict anything meaningful from their profiles anyways. As a freshmen you and your roommate will likely have lived under the supervision of your parents fro most of your life. Being in college this means that you will both begin to dramatically...

I do appreciate the feedback. It helps to have transport across membranes put into perspective. I'll probably add membrane transport to my list to of things to do.

Teaching myself bio need feedback

Hi, I'm teaching myself basic biology in preparation for a upper div undergrad plant community course in the fall. I'm not taking biology as a course because because I think taking a lower div undergrad course would drive me insane (grad student). The areas that I need to understand are things like ...

Re: My Educational Curiosity is Dying

If you're serious, start taking classes from a community college or if one's close enough a local public university. I knew some kids when I was in high school who took multivar calc from Stanford because there wasn't any math left at my high school for them.

Re: You see, it's not that I'm lazy,it's just that I don't care

The only thing that I have to say is that I hated school until I got to gradschool. Then no one was bothering me about classes they thought I should take. I get to research my interests. I get to take the classes I want. I think it's awesome. Pretty much all my schooling (~17 years) up to this point...
