### Re: What-If 0042: "Longest Sunset"

If you're at Svalbard in the first place, chances are you're there either during the midnight sun or the polar night. Each lasts for four months. The sun takes up about 30 minutes of arc on the sky, so there should be a roughly three day sunset. I figure you could drive until you run out of gas.

### Re: Wave on a string propagating into a black hole

You're right, I wasn't aware of how serious that was. But is that all there is to it? Does the existence of the string itself guarantee that the wave will come back?

### Re: Wave on a string propagating into a black hole

The reason I'm willing to assume a string that can't exist in real life is this: Matter not working as it should on the other hand of the event horizon is an obvious problem, but it's a boring one. If the existence of such a string is enough to make this work, then fine, but it seems to me that tran...

A degree in education can help you secure a position as a lecturer (but not necessarily scientist) at universities that offer such positions. My first year calc lecturer got her degree in education, then decided to take some math classes to be able to be a high school math teacher. Turned out she qu...

### Wave on a string propagating into a black hole

I thought of this gedankenexperiment a while back, and can't solve it. I've consulted a few of my professors, who don't even want to touch it because it's not their field of study. So I turn to the trusty xkcd forums for help. The problem is as follows: Suppose we have a black hole, a nail and a str...

That's kind of cool. What kind of algorithm or system was used to create the images? I'm pretty sure it was done in Logo. ### DIY laser

Is there any chance of this actually working without ridiculously expensive equipment? I currently assume that a solid state laser would be...
