Re: What-if 0005: "Robot Apocalypse"

Given the recent news of MIT's cheetah robot, this thread needs to be updated ? The number of amok robots capable of getting across the threshold of a doorway, has increased.

Woohoo. A chance to use unusably bad esperanto.

Re: 1459: "Documents"

I hope mine's not that disorganized. But I'm already on my 4th laptop (5th if an accidental rm -rf / turns one laptop into two) and stuff naturally gets a little lost each transition; no upgrade is ever seamless. ( http://xkcd.com/1360/ ? ). Filelight was a cool utility to make a recursive pie chart...

Works in opera 12, at least for one-and-3/4-zooms. After that, rendering performance slows to a crawl.

Re: 1406: "Universal Converter Box"

I had thought that some of the possible combinations were absurd, because of the rough categories ⋅ video-primary ⋅ audio-primary ⋅ other-primary (usb, ethernet) ⋅ power-primary (120 vac, magsafe, diesel) not all, can be easily interchanged with each other. Bu...

Re: What-if #0094: Billion-Story Building

If we just had a thousand million cube shaped rooms and had to stack them to make a building (with as much width and breadth at the base as we liked) how feasible would the resulting building be and what shape would be best for it? With somewhat arbitrary parameters (minimize cost of foundation, mi...

Re: What-if #0094: Billion-Story Building

Another problem, if there aren't enough already, is time. I don't really see the point of requesting floors to be built, that I'll never see. If I spend 1 minute visiting floor, and change floors once a minute for 10 hours a day; I can only visit about 220,000 stories in a year, and 15,000,000 stori...

Re: 1360: "Old Files"

The oldest files I have are from about 2005. I got my first computer in 2003. Then in 2005, while testing out some backup tools (some of which; like svn; create lots of copies) . . . I accidentally deleted a huge amount of stuff. What I thought would merely delete the unnecessary duplicates; actuall...

Re: What-If 0091: "Faucet Power"

It seems like this What-If is missing the biggest part of the question - he wanted to generate power from HOT water. I imagine his situation was much like mine, I pay for my own electricity, but my hot water comes from a large communal water heater. What is the best way to get energy back from the ...

Re: Types of Editors

I'm surprised that nobody's posted a deathnote reference yet.

For the WYSIHYD editors, it's probably the case that if you don't see anything within 10 seconds of opening the main window, you'll probably die of a heart attack within the next few minutes.

Perhaps the wrong thread to ask, but anyone else feel that the board-level substutitions should be disabled in a month or so, once everyone forgets about this comic?

It's not in javascript, but here's a perl version. #!/usr/bin/perl -wp BEGIN { %substitutions = ("car" => "cat", "cars" => "cats", "space" => "spaaace"); #etc, etc, $regexmid = join("|", keys(%substitutions)); } s/(?<=\W)($regexmi...
