I just came here to say that the long drive up into the U.P. just got a whole lot longer.

And, interestingly, the U.P. wasn't replaced. It's all now just one giant(er) Lake Michiperior?

Re: What-If 0124: "Lunar Swimming"

Do the hydrogen and oxygen atoms suddenly get more mass when they bond to form water? 'Cuz if not then bringing them separated and then bonding them there wouldn't make a bit of difference. I'm a mathematician, not a chemist.... but water vapor in the air is significantly less dense than water liqu...

Re: What-If 0124: "Lunar Swimming"

I agree, best What-If since the book, but let's talk about it rather than the lack of consistency in the medium... I had two thoughts. First, why take earth-water and try to bring it to the moon? That, as Randall stated, would cause immense problems. Why not just take hydrogen and oxygen and convert...

Anybody else notice that "The Arch" was featured on the main search page of bing.com? ... or am I the only one who uses Bing... Come on, they practically PAY me to do so! I've earned a whole bunch of Amazon gift cards! At least they're PAYING me to use my data (unlike Google, who just take...

Re: What-If 0089: "Tungsten Countertop"

So what IS with the Tungsten Countertop itself? I'm guessing the person saw/heard of a countertop with a tungsten color finish and thought the countertop was made of tungsten. I'm wondering if "countertop" isn't a kitchen installation... but rather some apparatus which is akin to a top (t...

Re: What-If 0089: "Tungsten Countertop"

This raises a bizarre point. To conserve electricity, the U.S. government has prohibited incandescent lighting over a certain wattage. Does throwing tungsten into the sun, causing to it to glow with a wattage in excess of the legal limit, violate this law? Since when is Sun american soil? Since whe...

Re: What-If 0089: "Tungsten Countertop"

My favorite "a ha" moment here was the "thousands of kilometers" note/citation. I think we need to start using SI prefixes for our larger numbers. How far is it from the earth to the sun? Wiki says 1.496 x 10 8 . Instead, it should be 149.6 megameters, or 0.1496 gigameters. How ...
