Re: 1545: "Strengths and Weaknesses"

There is always a part of me that wants to reply with:

Strength: "I'm routinely the smartest person in the room."

Weakness: "I'm routinely SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS."

Re: 1513: "Code Quality"

I can't tell you what the code behind my first perl-driven website looked like (well okay, I can: GORDIAN KNOT), but over the years that I've repeatedly grabbed it and reimplemented it with "only a few" changes, those changes added up to create a fairly decent blob of code. Methinks the co...

Re: 1501: Mysteries

If Randall thinks that the "Voynich Manuscript" tends toward "Not that weird" and "Explanation seems pretty clear," I'd *really* like to hear his thoughts on the matter. we already had that: The Voynich Manuscript is in the lower left quadrant? Clearly neither of the m...

Re: 1501: Mysteries

Fascinated that those weird things in the asphalt back home are actually A Thing Unto Themselves. I've walked past them dozens of times in my life and never thought twice about them. I always just figured they were simply a part of the normal noise level of Center City weirdness. Schizophrenic stree...

Re: 1504: "Opportunity"

NO, didn't you know? The government concocted the sound stage faked landing theory to hide the fact we have a permanent moon-base built by the lizard-men and used to spy on the brain-waves of americans in a secret plot to steal the world's oil. That is why they used the moon laser to ignite Chem-tr...

Re: 1497: "New Products"

I've been fairly fortunate that I've managed to recognize the earthshaking for what it was and diss the stupid for what it was with a pretty high degree of reliability. Recognized as earthshaking on sight: HTML. A quote from a conversation I had in 1993: "So in other words, you're telling me th...

Not overwhelmingly familiar with him, but am familiar enough through his various short articles and essays to feel that the world is a poorer place without him, although it is also a far, far richer place for his having been here in the first place, so it more than balances out in the end. As touchi...

Re: 1492: "Dress color"

You know, one issue that this brings up is the angst I've encountered when people talk about colorblindness -- or perception of anything, really. "But HOW DO WE KNOW if what I call red is the same as what you call red?!" We don't. Clearly, none of us have any farging idea what anyone else ...

It was my understanding that actual lead pipes get coated with dissolved minerals that are in the water, a bit like plaque in arteries, only in this case it's a good thing since it prevents the lead from actually coming in contact with the water. Y/n?

Re: 1492: "Dress color"

blah blah blah ... there's no evidence for and plenty of evidence against the scene being blue-lit like the left panel of the comic is. And absent such blue lighting, a white-and-gold interpretation is just ludicrous. If I could upvote this seven thousand times I would, but I can't. In lieu of that...

Re: What-If 0131: "Microwaves"

Did anyone notice the title text for the Standing Wave image is "Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack all dressed in black black black". I laughed out loud right at work. If anyone doesn't get the reference, this is a common children's clapping rhyme also used when jumping rope. The standing wave ima...

Re: 1491: "Stories of the Past and Future"

i've heard it said that we are "running out of retro". I forget the exact examples listed, but to the Romans ancient Egypt was retro, to Victorian England Rome was retro, skip a few... to the 1950s the Old West was retro, then by the 70s you had 50s retro, which seemed to be the trend for...

Re: 1491: "Stories of the Past and Future"

I think that would fit on the graph perfectly well. It's the horizontal line down the center; things that were written 0 years before or after their publication. If we still remember them today, then they would seem to us like period pieces (if they're from long enough ago for the setting to feel l...

Re: 1491: "Stories of the Past and Future"

The "former period piece" comment made me think of the corresponding category of "former contemporary fiction," with the first thing that popped to mind being the Sherlock Holmes stories. I remember hearing that Doyle was also a writer of historical novels, and that they were his...

Well, being left-handed hasn't always been a neutral topic either... Unfortunately, to some people, it still isn't. A minor consideration compared to many others, but try playing classical string music on a mirror image instrument, while bowing with the left hand. I've been screamed at and accused ...

Re: 1485: "Friendship"

Avoid doing anything that gives the impression of a date. The subtext is that it there is something uncomfortable, either for the people themselves, or for the speaker, in the notion of friendship between men being anything more than emotionally superficial. Another factor believed to influ...
