Re: 1849: "Decades"

I predict that radio will never go away. It is the only form of entertainment a person driving can enjoy.... Huh? What about audiobooks, podcasts, etc.? I've been listening to audiobooks as I drive for years, the equivalent of about 15,000 pages a year. No way I would have time to read that much on...

Re: 1836: "Okeanos"

When Twitch did that Cosmos livestream, it was like literally exactly this. I could only handle about five minutes of it. = Never seen it, but I can well believe it. After all, this comic is essentially an update of #202 (not a bad thing) which is not exaggerated in the slightest. I tend to see int...

Re: 1745: "Record Scratch"

Actually, that WAS the point. We use a record scratch as a social marker in TV/Film (See the TVTropes linked in the post above), but the Majority of people don't have a meaningful personal connection to records. I'm not sure I buy that assertion. Are there more people alive under the age of, say, 2...

Re: 1739: "Fixing Problems"

My favorite form of the sentiment that this comic expresses is the Programmer's Drinking Song : 100 little bugs in the code, 100 bugs in the code, fix one bug, compile it again, 101 little bugs in the code. 101 little bugs in the code..... Repeat until BUGS = 0

Re: 1737: "Datacenter Scale"

I love Asimov's "Let There Be Light". For me it's up there with Clarke's "The Nine Billion Names of God". Also known as the Asimov story that people never remember the title of. For the record, the official title is "The Last Question". I remember the name only because...

This comic reminds me an old Wizard of Id:
Rodney: The soldiers have discovered a marijuana field.
King: Tell them to burn it.
Rodney: They are. Ounce by ounce.

Re: 1500: Upside-Down Map

The fact that many actually refer to "Ireland" as "southern Ireland" is a constant point of annoyance to me and many others from the country. I've actually never heard that term here in the U.S.; consequently I assumed that "southern Ireland" referred to Northern Irela...

Re: 1497: "New Products"

If it weren't for the hazards of winter driving, I wouldn't even have a cell phone at all. Now that I live in California, I might actually go back to a land line, so that I can have everybody act like I'm the asshole for not being immediately available to them anywhere at any time. Or you could do ...

Re: 1431: Marriage

I was never sure how this ides sat with people on the other side of the argument, but from reading the previous comments it seems to be supported by many. It is my experience that a great many opp...

Re: 1431: Marriage

There's a big difference between "approval of" and "should be legal". For example, I don't approve of drinking alcohol: I wouldn't have married someone who does, we don't allow our children to do it (and wouldn't even if it were legal for minors to drink), and if another adult ca...

I don't see why a study like this would change over the years. I absolutely write faster in a mixed style than either exclusive...

Re: 1414: "Writing Skills"

I write with fountain pens all the time. Classy as hell :) Furthermore, in Belgium, almost anyone can write cursive. Sad evolution in the US... Why is that sad? Cursive serves no practical purpose and is generally speaking more difficult for other people to read, to the point of being impossible fo...

Again Randall draws a great comic that perfectly encapsulates my thoughts or experiences, and then ruins it by putting in a sophomoric swear word. Please, a little more maturity.

Re: 1309: "Infinite Scrolling"

Even worse is every lengthy web page on an Android phone, where if the phone is in a bad mood when you try to scroll, it somehow interprets your scroll as a wish to go very fast to either the top or bottom. Now not only do you have to try to find where you were, but it's quite likely the phone will ...

I wish I hadn't read this thread. I liked the comic a whole lot more when I thought it was about people complaining about free hosting sites shutting down. Did you not read the title? Or were you under the impression that Instagram is going away? I too thought the same thing as Angelastic when I fi...

[...] As someone said, this is such a tiny niche who would get the joke without research -- although I suppose the bemusement of the home owners is part of the point, so this comic wouldn't work if more people knew about the game. I guess Randall was aiming for the sweet spot where rabid game nerds...

I used to be completely honest about what I could or could not do and enthusiastic about figuring out how to do things I didn't yet know: "can you do this?" was always answered with either "easy!", "I think so", or "not yet, but I'll figure it out". Unfortuna...

Even more fun than telling them is, well, for example: A co-worker of mine asked some years back, "What are these Dead Sea Squirrels people are talking about?" So I gave her an explanation that was 90% true, with a perfectly straight face, about the Essenes who wrote their scriptures on dr...

I lost a mother to breast cancer a few years ago. She had avoided going to see a doctor to find out why she was in pain, until her boss essentially ordered her to go to the doctor.
