Re: What is a reasonable return on capital

A couple of thoughts that came into my mind: Being a farmer vs buying Walmart shares. One may be less capital intensive or provide a better return (I'm not going to run the numbers) but there are alternatives to looking purely at these options from a numbers perspective. Some people consider it thei...

Re: Self Perception of Gender and Sexuality

I don't have to think twice when choosing left or right at public restrooms. Is there some consistency between male/female restrooms and left/right? If so, I have never noticed, and have definitely seen exceptions. (One building at my high school had two similar floors with a pair of bathrooms on e...

Re: Voting system simulation

This is probably going to be a stupid point/question, but does a one candidate ballot have any effect on the above, um, outcome methods or voting strategies? I figure this is likely irrelevant but I don't know the source code nor do I know this history of these discussions here so I wasn't sure if t...

Re: The Right to Record

Came across this article on MSN this morning. Looks like photography can be protected as a work of art. An "artist" displayed pictures of his neighbors that he took of them through their windows, unbeknownst to them. http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/family-loses-legal-battle-against-photog...

Re: Trolly Probleem

On the surface, saving more people seems to imply greater appreciation for life, but in doing so, you are making the statement that consciously taking a human life is okay if you feel it is justified. I don't think it is saying that, because we aren't given a choice to NOT take a life in these exam...

I am in Olathe for what it's worth. What do people do in meetups? What ever they want?

Re: Can one prove a being doesn't exist?

so, perhaps "Snow is white" may be false, despite appearing white, because I cannot trust my senses to yield truths. I'm sure this could be argued to various degrees (and has been), but I'm not exactly sure how much bearing it has here unless something close to a skeptical position is bei...

Re: The Right to Record

...some police departments in the states also have or are working on license plate scanning technology to track cars. I don't know how much scope these things have in terms of tracking, but the theory is it will help them track stolen cars, people with warrants, and suspicious behavior (gang hideou...

Re: What were your dreams last night?

I was at a house that was presumably mine but looked nothing like my current home. One friend was playing a guitar hero/pinball hybrid video game and a home made coffee table (made by me, but again looking nothing like the one I made IRL) was starting to fall apart and 2 of my other friends in my dr...

Re: Converting to Post Scarcity

We might be off topic from the OP already, but if the costs of production are being driven to zero, thereby driving cost to the consumer to (near) zero, is the citizen's wage even necessary at that point?

Re: Advice for Picking Career

Is not going right away an option? You could take your time working odd jobs or trying an internship (unpaid if you can stay with your folks might even be a decent option). This way you get 2 benefits: 1) finding things you like so9 you can pursue them, or things you don't like (cross those off the ...

Re: INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hello.
I'm Reko. 29 and from St. Louis, but no longer residing there. I enjoy weightlifting, webcomics, reading, and drinking beer with my frans although not always in that order. Lurked around here and there for years and finally joined to get in on some discussions.

Thanks!

Re: The Right to Record

Congratulations, I've been stalking for a while (years), and you guys finally got me to register. My $0.02: We are already being recorded indiscriminately. You walk into a store, you're on surveillance. You drive down the street, still cameras there. The second you enter the public sphere, you have...
