They addressed this in one of the press briefings. They said it was a political hurdle they could not cross.

Re: 1446: "Landing"

From the updates this morning, a woman from the battery team claimed that the solar panels and images now indicate that Philae is on all three lander feet, and has not moved since the first panorama was taken. I'm a bit confused how this is possible based on what was reported before. I'm guessing th...

Shouldn't take too long. They were claiming that there was 50 hours of battery power.

Re: 1446: "Landing"

In the briefing they said that the first bounce (of nearly 2 hours) launched the craft up about 1km from the landing site, and because of the rotation of 67P and the angle of bounce, it translated about 1km away from the landing site. It initially hit at 1m/s (as planned) but the cold-gas thruster, ...

Re: 1446: "Landing"

More interesting news from Philae - it bounced multiple times! The sensors detected 3 landings, at 15:33, 17:26 and 17:33 UTC. Notice that nearly two hours passed after the first bounce. I still can't find anything confirming that it stuck to the surface. With so little gravity, the long bounce time...

Re: 1446: "Landing"

There will be more updates from ESA at 13:00 GMT / 14:00 CET, Thursday, 13 November. And the first phase of the science mission lasts about 2.5 days. Then after that it will rely on solar power to continue with longer term activities as long as conditions allow.

Re: 1446: "Landing"

Hopefully he'll have some good comics or timelapse comics for the other exciting events coming up too. Expected in early May, the Dawn spacecraft will be landing on Ceres, a dwarf planet between Earth and Mars with 2.8% of Earth's gravity. It already orbited the protoplanet Vesta on it's way over. S...

Re: 1446: "Landing"

It's very impressive that they have been next to the comet for several months, matching speed, getting closer and closer since dec 2013. That must have been the second highest anxiety level apart from landing. It was said that 80% of the science was done from Rosetta. Philae was just a side project...

Re: 1446: "Landing"

They are saying it landed, bounced a little bit because it didn't attach, and landed a second time. So maybe "HAVE WE LANDED ON A COMET:" needs to say "TWICE!" Re: Rosetta - they plan to keep it within view for at least several days. Then it stays in orbit for a while. As it's ru...

uh oh...

"Officials aren't sure of Philae's condition after reaching the comet's surface. Data indicates the lander's harpoon anchoring system did not fire, and mission control is receiving intermittent signals from the probe."

Re: 1446: "Landing"

The top thruster was there to counter the upward push of the harpoons launching. I think the plan was to harpoon first, and use that pulling force to engage the screws from the lander feet.
