Re: 0947: “Investing”

Something else to consider, what if there's another recession and I end up being unemployed for 3 or 4 years? What if I have kids to support? I'd rather live off of my liquidized savings than, say, selling my house and car and pawning my furniture and moving my (theoretical) family into my parents b...

Re: 0947: “Investing”

In fact, there's almost no scenario where putting money into a bank makes any sense. No, there's no scenario in which *investing* money in banks makes any sense. I use my bank card multiple times a day, and I keep $5,000 in my savings account, with another $1,000-$3,000 in my checking account. (it ...

Re: 0947: “Investing”

I think the point is investing at least keeps you from losing money - or for very low return rates *as much* money - as you would keeping it in a bank. Even if that low interest rate means your money will have slightly less purchasing power after 10 years, in the end, it's still your money. If you s...

Re: "December 25th" Discussion

At worst, he was an actual schizophrenic that believed he was the sun of a nonexistent god that died like a bastard. The mythological figure of Jesus never expressed belief, at least according to the Gospels, that he was the son of God. No no no, he's the sun of God! Apparently "Jesus Christ S...

Re: "December 25th" Discussion

I haven't got any birthday presents for years now. Everyone just says "oh, and that's your birthday present too" but it's not any bigger than any other Christmas present.

*sigh*

Re: "Prudence" Discussion

The entire Narnia series was ruined for me when it was revealed to me the obvious fact that... it's a Christ allegory ...and all my child like innocents was destroyed in that moment. If you do not already know this knowledge, please don't click the spoiler link. If it seems magical and wonderfu...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

I wanted to point out that I believe the concept of technology increasing exponentially is false. I think rather it speeds up and slows down and goes sideways. Sure, the 20th century had a ridiculous increase in technology level, but I think that'll level off in a few years, if it hasn't started to ...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

IMO this essay is required reading about OSC / Ender's Game. Read it a few years ago, and just re-read it. I think the main flaw in the argument is that OSC's goal throughout the book is to generate sympathy for Ender. I don't know about you guys, but I identified far more with Peter than I ever di...

Re: "Locke and Demosthenes" Discussion

I wanted to make a few comments on the believability of Ender's Game: OSC's books are well known for having characters who are far too competent and intelligent to be entirely believable. But this is actually justified in Ender's Game, where Peter and Valentine not only two of the smartest people in...
