Re: any game developers out there?

Hey Koa, we're working on a similar game using the Bible instead of Holmes for the text. Same basic mechanic of swapping letters. Any icon and splash screen ideas? I want to skin it with a non-religion-specific theme so that it will appeal to Jews as well as Christians (so no crosses or Jesus or tha...

Re: sound and mute in mobile games and apps

Thanks for the advice. I hope we got it right. We tried to play it safe, so that if your phone is on mute or vibrate mode, the game will not produce any sound. While the game is active, the volume controls control game volume even if no sound is currently playing. These two requirements were more co...

Yes. We had one Norwegian and two British friends over yesterday, and they all pronounced it like I do.

Lazar wrote:So your pronunciation is like the British one (although in their case it only rhymes with "con", not with "pawn").

I (the Canadian) pronounce "shone" to rhyme with "pawn" and "con". My wife (the American) pronounces "shone" to rhyme with "own" and "loan".

Wow. Very pretty. I'll propose it to my partner. Can I assume that this image is entirely your creation and that you give me full free rights to use it for commercial purposes? I would of course credit your name on the About page.

Thanks.

Re: Probability/cryptography question

Interesting suggestions, Flumble. I would consider polyalphabetic ciphers, but I don't think they're possible to implement with the simple game mechanic I have now (dragging one letter onto another to swap all L1s with all L2s and vice versa).

Re: any game developers out there?

Good point, Koa. I'm just a simple web programmer who built the game in my spare time with another simple web programmer. We don't have two pixels of graphic ability between us, and we did this on zero budget. If the game generates enough income to support it, one of the first things I want to do is...

What happens when two programmers with no asthetic sense between them design and build a mobile game without hiring an artist? Ugly or really ugly? You decide. Follow the link in my sig to check out Holmes Cryptic Cipher.

sound and mute in mobile games and apps

I just programmed and published my first mobile game, and noticed that it's a real headache to get hardware mute and volume controls to work as I would expect them, on both Android and iOS. When your device is in mute or vibrate mode do you expect your games and other apps to respect that?

Yiddish וואס is pronounced "Voss" where the "o" is like the "o" in "core".

Hebrew למה is pronounced "LU-mu" where both "u"s are pronounced like the "u" in "bum".

I grew up in Canada where we would indeed use 3-14-(20)15 today. Now I live in a different country where it's 14-3-(20)15. I must say it makes a lot more sense this way, but it would be nice to have more Pi.

Thanks for the advice, Polako. Well, here's a link to where you can get the game. There are free and paid versions each for iOS and Android devices. It's a cryptic cipher puzzle game based on the text of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I'd love some opinions.

best novels in public domain (internationally)?

What are the greatest books out there that are already in public domain? Specifically I'd like ones that are popular in multiple countries and at least a few hundred pages long. I'm looking for good source text candidates for games. Not just English, but other languages too.

Yes, I was talking about random swaps where the two letters are chosen arbitrarily from the full 26. Thus it's possible that the same letters are swapped multiple times with each other or with other partners.

Probability/cryptography question

Say you have a paragraph or two of text from a book of English fiction. You remove all punctuation and capitalize all letters. Then you start swapping letters, for example switching all the Fs with Js (and vice versa). How many of these two-way swaps can you do before any more subsequent swaps will ...

I'm Canadian. After six years of marriage, my American wife and I are still discovering words that we pronounce differently from each other. Last week it was "shone".
