Re: Trump presidency

Its been three pages, probably should have a thread split on guns. Anyone else see the irony in the current government ignoring calls for discussion of gun control in order to ensure that the populace has the ability to rise up against their government if they do not reflect the opinions of the peop...

Re: Trump presidency

I don't really consider marriage as an important thing anymore. Divorce is too easy and too common for it to have real spiritual meaning, and marrying for tax reasons is kinda eh. Basing it around children is probably better, assuming the benefits aren't good enough that you'd be incentivized to hav...

Re: Encryption for the Lich Queen's spys?

Yup. Encryption gets difficult when anybody can just buy some time with a super computer.

Do you suppose kingdoms just keep an abyssal on retainer for this sort of thing?

Re: Encryption for the Lich Queen's spys?

DnD rules don't have any spells for it because Decipher Script is just a skill check. So basically it's unsupported by magic, beyond stacking Int bonuses. As a DM I'd probably have the creator take 20 on making it to set the DC, then give a cracker one check per workday or something, with reductions...

Re: Trump presidency

Where the President and his fucking shills put political expediency above not electing a rapist? I'm just going to remind you that a number of Democrats made just that calculation when they voted for Hillary. That would have put Bill back in the White House as first husband. There is ample evidence...

Re: 1914: "Twitter Verification"

Wait, so he got the banned message almost the instant he sent the first message?

I think I'd agree with Mutex. To assume that he was banned for contesting the presumably racist Omegaa is absurd, since it asserts that the auto ban system detects racism and then specifically protects it.

Re: The Thread To Remind Me We're Living In The Future

Through the use of a technique known as CRISPR-cas9 it is now feasible to change an organism's genome in such a way that it is transmitted to its offspring at a rate of 100%. So... how (soon) does this get weaponized? What's our defense against a hostile power (say) creating a plague of super-locus...

Re: 1914: "Twitter Verification"

Huh.

I wonder why they combined a benefits system with the verified system.

If they hadn't done that they could just sell the benefits system ala Reddit gold.

How does twitter make money? Are they pure ads and userdata sales?

Re: The Thread To Remind Me We're Living In The Future

I'm a little sad I got referenced by the AI discussion and not pinged, but man did it go out of my scope of knowledge fast. Science tax: Through the use of a technique known as CRISPR-cas9 it is now feasible to change an organism's genome in such a way that it is transmitted to its offspring at a ra...

Re: Encryption for the Lich Queen's spys?

I may be reading too far into the setting, but: The lich queen probably exists in a realm of fantasy. We should consider magical means of foiling encryption. Whatever system probably has to be memorize-able as any code book would be possible to scry and be far more prone to being stolen than in mund...

Re: Antifa & neo-Nazi Ned in: "Too Many Violence?"

A question for people bringing up 'where do you draw the line about who is punchable'. In what world is someone claiming to be actively working towards genocide not across the 'stop with violence' line? I've watched streams where people have been raided by swat via an anonymous tip about a bomb as a...

Re: Let's talk about race, 2017 edition

I mean, climate change has a deadline. Some say we've already passed it. Space travel has a deadline in the form of space junk getting too far out of hand before we can setup a way to clean it up. Racism doesn't, barring some kind of mass extinction event drastically changing the makeup of the human...

Re: Let's talk about race, 2017 edition

Talk about how you draw that distinction. How does "statues of men who fought to keep slavery, erected during an upsurge in white on black violence" sound as a standard of statues that should probably get taken down for being racist? The slippery slope that leads to the destruction of all...

Re: 1002: "Game AIs"

It isn't an issue in starcraft ais. The game is pretty small. So much of a non issue that we can speed up the game by 50-100 times speed. We were really only limited by how fast we could render frames. Some of my anti-stealth work and a bad ''sell all buildings before they get destroyed'' script wou...

Re: Trump presidency

I've recently starting seeing comments along the lines of 'Trump broke the law in office'. To my fairly limited comedy-news derived knowledge he hasn't done a whole lot of anything at all.

Did I miss something somewhere, or is this just people parroting stuff?

Yo, I worked on a starcraft AI for a university project last year. Our tournament website: http://www.cs.mun.ca/~dchurchill/starcraftaicomp/ - The current implementation used in tournaments only allows the AI information that a truly perceptive player with perfect memory can aquire. I.E. they know t...

Really, actually curing cancer likely requires understanding and control of genetics and nanotechnology on a level so advanced that I'm not sure I've ever read a scifi story that has had it available to the general public.

Its probably about as easy to solve telomere degradation and cure aging.

That summary thread really ought to be in the first post. It is very likely that I am having trouble getting into the right headspace here. You're missing the depth of the "know" chain, though. Sure, I know that Erica sees at least 98 blue-eyed people, and maybe it happens that David also knows that Erica sees at least 98 blue-eyed people, but I don't know that . What I know is that Bob knows that Carol knows that David knows...

Is it possible/legal/detectable to use an Adblock-esqe program that would mark the ads as viewed/clicked?
