I quite like this projection: http://strangemaps.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/afrasia_watershed_2.jpg Also out of the ones that Randall posted I most like the Equirectangular, because I like to invent worlds and it is the easiest one to work with in that sense – although you have to be really careful...

Re: 0943: "Empirical"

The joke's really funny, I like the comic very much. But I would like to point out to anyone in the forums who doesn't know it yet: "will" originally meant something akin to the modern word "want" (which lives on in the expression "be willing to"). Hence the expression...

Yeah, people must be switching them around now or something because I went via Science to Mathematics and now I'm stuck in a loop because I'm back at Mathematics. *shrug*

Re: 843: "Misconceptions"

QI gets more wrong than it gets right, it seems. At the very least, a lot of what it says is spurious. Specifically, I remember it repeating the misconception that Aristotle miscounted the legs of a fly. QI's stated intention is basically this: so that you're not repeating these misconceptions at p...

Re: "Ahead Stop" discussion (#781)

First time on XKCD here, and I'd like to point out that this is a curious US habit, rather than one of road engineers in general. In the UK, they're always written the correct way around, so it's "BUS STOP" and not "STOP BUS". The only problems arise in Wales and the Scottish Hi...

I was taught that a geek was a nerd that had a social life. Evidently none of you were.

Re: "Dyslexics" Discussion

I find it funny, but for a completely different reason. The ubiquity of the 'untie' joke made me parse that word as 'untie', and it took a good few seconds before I realised it did, indeed, say 'unite'. The joke is on me, and I like it. I think this is the intent – I didn't get it myself because I'...

Re: "Infrastructures" discussion

You know... I'm a bit confused, because I've never been allowed to submit essays electronically. Maybe that's just me, my university, my department? I dunno. Perhaps (though I very much doubt it) it's a UK thing? Either way, it's been paper all the way. At university we have to do that to preserve a...

Re: The Xkcd Cookbook (with an unfinished index in the OP)

I haven't read through the thread, so I'm just going to leave these here in the hope that I can brighten someone's day. :P Vegan chocolate cake 1.5 cups / 375 ml flour 3 tbsp / 45 ml cocoa 1 tsp / 5 ml baking soda 1 cup / 250 ml sugar ½ tsp / 2.5 ml salt 6 tbsp / 90 ml veg oil 1 tbsp / 15 ml vinegar...

Re: “Trade Expert” discussion

"Pound" is a common name for the '#' character. So: "pound bang slash bin slash bash". Suitably violent. Again there's a difference between British and American usage, because the pound sign for us is £, of course. On a British keyboard, £ is shift+3 and # has its own key... On ...

Re: “Trade Expert” discussion

A slash isn't going to be written in cursive letters... it's always a separate character. If you write "one/two" by hand, do you start the slash at the bottom? Err, yes, yes of course. No, that's idiotic. Very insightful. Unfortunately for you, most of the world disagrees with you. ... re...

Re: “Trade Expert” discussion

I've never heard 'backslash' on UK television – when I was a child they used to say 'forward slash' in web addresses to make sure people got it right, actually. It made them slow to say any web addresses though – it was always something along the lines of www-dot-bbc-dot-co-dot-uk-forward slash-cbbc...

i'm disappointed that i can't do 'kill self' in the text adventure. :P anyone know if you can do anything once you reach the bed? also thought i'd state the blindingly obvious since i don't think anyone else has: that you can do 'random' for a random comic and 'display ###' to display comic ###... b...

haha, i had a bit of a "get out of my head" moment with the alt-text, mainly because an example came up within my coursework today. it's also what i tend to think about the nature-nurture debate. but obviously i'd never take the application of the idea too far...

Re: "We Get It" Discussion

I remember when I got my first boyfriend he wasn't too keen on publicising the relationship at all (not being "out" to your parents is fair enough, but to people you know and trust?), so when I was among other groups I was probably overly vocal with them. I'm fairly sure I was like this at...
