Re: 2182: "When I'm Back at a Keyboard"

It is easy to type a forum reply on the smart phone. It just takes several times as long, especially when BBCode is involved. [b][i][u][color=#408040][s][sub][sup]BBCode[/sup][/sub][/s][/color][/u][/i][/b]

Rather "antagonist that should be more capable".

Re: Why use top post or bottom post, when you can put everything you want to say into the subject line?

Subject: Why use top post or bottom post, when you can put everything you want to say into the subject line? I have a colleague who uses a text based client to access his email. Having been old enough to be among the people who started out using Email by putting the phone on an accoustic coupler ap...

Re: 2139: "Email Settings"

Does anyone actually ever use suggested replies in e-mails? They seem kind of awful to me. Yes, they are. Especially, since other users will recognize them. Related: Gmail also offers autocompletion, but for some reason it only offers it in the text body, where the completion is usually off, but do...

2116: ".NORM Normal File Format"

Re: 2101: Technical Analysis

If anyone is curious, the value of a stock is the present value of all the earnings it will ever have. Or, what is the same, the present value of all the dividends it will ever pay. It's a little uncertain what the future earnings will be, and how to discount them to the present. But if you can do ...

Re: 2101: Technical Analysis

The suggestion is that since equities trading is zero sum, sophisticated trading mechanisms merely waste resources in the aggregate. But if that's true, why does such economic activity proliferate? I don't think the market is some magical omniscient force for good or anything, but I do think it pus...

Re: 2091: "Million, Billion, Trillion"

For years now I've been trying to get people to accept Thousiard as another name for 10^6. Here's one I foisted upon a trivia contest a few years back: what's the next number in the series 3, 9, 27, 2, 0, ...? When everyone announced they were stuck, I offered the first hint that I would accept an ...

Re: 2087: "Rocket Launch"

Thanks to this comic I finally found out what "care bear" means. Turns out it's the English name of what German TV called "Glücksbärchi" (lit. "Happyness Bears" or, less fitting outside Las Vegas, "Lucky Bears"). Ah good times as a child... There's actually ev...

Re: 2066: "Ballot Selfies"

you take money from people who have too much of it and give it to people who don't have enough, while still leaving enough difference that it's still worth the effort trying to work your way into the first group and out of the last Except that those who have REALLY a lot, have ways around this. Suc...

They will work less for the same amount of money. Or they will work at more attractive times if it's work that does not go away by postponing it, and more people will find a job. What’s to say they will work less for the same amount of money? There’s lots and lots of hourly workers — what incentive...

On mail-in-voting: In our Austrian hair-thin far-right against liberal-with-far-left-influence presidental election, the far-right candidate won with 35 to 20 in the primaries, and lost by a miniscule margin in the run-off vote. Since in Austria nothing is ever done quite by the book, they found a r...

Re: 2066: "Ballot Selfies"

I hadn't considered the ability-to-prove-how-you-voted angle of it, but that aside, I am super in favor of voting by mail and think that should be the normal default way of voting for everyone. From what I understand, countries that introduced digital remote voting as the default actually have seen...

Re: 2033: "Repair or Replace"

So, I'm considering spending a few hundred more to get a new washing machine and junking one that would work perfectly well if the UI could take commands. I'll probably end up just fiddling with the control ring as long as the washing machine works OK otherwise, which is neither repair nor replace....

As one final example, consider people who do quick mathematical calculations using Google search . Just think about that for a good long time. If it doesn't strike you as absurd, you're probably not a programmer. (NB: It's perfectly fine that Google makes this functionality available to its users. ...
