Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

Thanks, I'll use protected, then (and packages - until now, I had practically all my files in one package). I'm a beginner, so I didn't mean to say that Java was doing something wrong, just that it didn't seem very intuitive to me.

Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

I'm learning Java, and it seems a bit wrong to me that you can't access private member variables of the parent class in a subclass. When I want to override a function using those member variables, how should I do it? From what I understand of encapsulation, these variables shouldn't be accessible ou...

Re: English as She Is Spoke [English practice]

Thanks. I've got another two questions: if someone uses a hands-free mobile phone, do they "have their hands free"? Sounds very translated to my ears.

Is it preferable to use "from the satellite's point of view" instead of "from the point of view of the satellite"?

I read that "due to" should only be used where you can substitute "caused by", but im not sure precisely how to use that either. It's not possible/elegant to say "Due to being raised in an agnostic family, becoming an atheist was not a big event for me", is it? Am I cor...

I'm in the area from August 7th to September 7th 4th, a meetup would be wonderful. August 12th to 14th are pretty much the only days I don't have plenty of time (I'm planning to go to the Outside Lands festival).

English as She Is Spoke [English practice]

Welcome to the English practice thread! I'm sure there are many non-native speakers on this board who haven't had the opportunity to perfect their English yet. While learning vocabulary is easy, at least for me, picking up grammatical rules and the many subtleties of the language is difficult, and t...

I'm new to programming, and during one of my first projects, I came across this: If you have three classes A, B and C in C++, and A has instances of B and C, how would you go about the problem that B needs to be able to access member variables/functions of C? At the moment my solution is to let B ha...

Would it be a bad idea to make an English practice thread? I'm probably not the only non-native speaker who would find a thread where you can ask minor questions and your writing gets (is?) corrected useful, but I'm unsure why there isn't already one.

I like the cross-eyed method. You don't need glasses for it, just focus on a point between you and the screen and try to get a clear third image between the original two. Wikipedia probably explains this better than I do and has lots of images.

I'll just pretend the thread wasn't inactive for three weeks.

This isn't an actual recording because the keyboard decided to stop working, but I think MIDI is okay too. It's not exciting, but it's loopable and the harmonies are quite simple: C - F - Am - Bdim. Have fun with it, everyone!
