Can you give a concrete example of some f and g that you might actually consider? Or even an extremely simplified example. Simplified might be better to make it easier to talk about but I know sometimes it's hard to capture all of the necessary details while simplifying.

I second ucim's recommendation of making up your own problems. Going through this process and getting familiar with it can really help your understanding of *why* the methods used to solve the original factoring problem work the way they do.
