Re: 1521: “Sword in the Stone”

Doesn't the monarch theoretically have the power (and duty) to act as a kind of emergency break on the democratic government, with the power to just dismiss the existing administration and call for a new one to be elected? Has that ever actually happened? Would that cause the same kind of crisis th...

Re: 1241: "Annoying Ringtone Champion"

Recently, the mosquito device has become popular as a means of driving off teenagers. Teenagers have responded by recording the sound as a ringtone that most adults cannot hear.
Personally, I'm nearly 30 and the things cause a headache after a short period of time.

Re: 1184: "Circumference Formula"

In the age of the colour printer, why don't we have an agreed colour scheme for academic documents? We more or less managed it for html links . You could make references a particular colour, but you would have to design it to accomodate things like colour blindness and human eye sensitivity, especia...

Re: 1158: "Rubber Sheet"

To determine the height achieved: First find the equilibrium point. The sheet is under tension due to the weight of the ball. Since our problem is cylindrically symmetical, the sheet can be modelled as a simple spring ( F = -kx ). The weight of the ball is easy to determine, given its mass; whether ...

At Crécy, the English were not as badly outnumbered as at Agincourt. The French army was badly organised, and the English army far more disciplined and prepared. Agincourt is considered a greater victory because of the heavy disadvantages which the English faced. It was only by choosing a long and n...

You might well be able to do this if you sat in a sphere. I was thinking of the ping pong balls balanced on a hair dryer trick, too. Your weight coupled to the sphere should keep it's orientation stable. What about sitting on the convex side of a hollow hemisphere, with somoe kind of equally spaced...

A couple of thoughts about the space fountain idea. What would it do to the Earth's magnetic field and things like the Van Allen belts and the deflection of solar particles in the region. And how noisy would it be? Is there anywhere you could put it without permanently wrecking the place?
