Re: 0957: "Development"

I enjoyed it. It's just one of those ones where the absurd is proposed, and its funny because of its absurdity.

Bureaucrat made redundant, still employed

The West Australian One Perth Taxpayers have been forking out $100,000 a year for a public servant with absolutely nothing to do. Criminologist Glenn Ross started with the Department of Premier and Cabinet in 2007 despite there being no work for him. The 55-year-old became so bored he soon asked to...

Re: Pedophilephobia

As an aside, I find it interesting how society has reacted so differently to pedophilia compared to other uncommon and abnormal sexual practices. Going back two hundred years, interracial or homosexual relationships revolted people. We've since worked to get over that revulsion and be more accepting...

Re: Oral Sex: Greater risk for throat cancer than smoking

Just to be clear, are they talking about -on boy or -on girl oral sex here? The article doesn't mention it.

Re: Gender-blind car insurance

I'm a second year at university studying to be an actuary now, so I understand a bit of what will happen here. Several of the mentors that have come to speak to us over the last year and a bit have outright admitted that they skirt the laws against discrimination in their models. One who worked in b...

Re: "Neo-Fascist Project in Israel"

So...who exactly called this "Neo-Fascist"? The article OP cited didn't, and the OP said he wouldn't call it fascism. I'm a little curious where those quotation marks came from in the thread title. As for the actual event, it's hardly surprising that (presumably ultraconservative) rabbis ...

Re: Minecraft

I logged on to the XKCD server and built a hedge maze south of spawn, a little beyond the giant railway hill. It uses over 300 separate reeds plants, and almost as many stone tiles! I feel kind of bad about how basic my creation is compared to all the other wonders though. The railway cart dispenser...

Re: Interesting Video Game Menus

The StarTopia menu is probably the best I can remember. The game is basically sim-space-station, and when you bring the menu up, the camera zooms out into space, and then focusses on a little satellite. Then the satellite opens and a TV screen extends from inside it, with the options, and each time ...

Re: Fixed fines create class justice?

Alternatively, fines could be set at the average cost of the damages of a crime. Jaywalking, for example, has a chance to delay traffic by a minute or so, multiplied by however many people it delays on average is so many lost man hours, and so on. Then the fines could be remunerative rather than pun...

Re: representing domains as sets

How does the ' \ ' operator work for multiple exceptions? for example, would it be correct to represent A ∩ B' ∩ C' as A \ B \ C ? And as for D g = ℝ \ (ℤπ) is it correct to use parentheses like that or should squiggly brackets be used? ℤ is a set, does that mean a scalar multiple of ℤ is a set as w...

Re: representing domains as sets

Okay, I've edited the OP to reflect those suggestions (what do you call a suggestion that's also a fact?).

To clarify the purpose of the ' \ ' operator, is, for sets A and B

A \ B = A ∩ B'

true?

"It is clear that the natural domain of..." is what I should have said?

representing domains as sets

Given the function f(x) = 1/x it is clear that the domain of f(x) is all of the real numbers except for 0. Is it correct to represent this domain as the set of numbers D f = {ℝ - 0} edit D f = ℝ \ {0} ? Given the function g(x) = 1/sinx it is clear that the domain of g(x) is all of the real numbers e...

Re: Iran declares itself a nuclear state

A peaceful dictatorship? What? Why can't a dictatorship be peaceful? "In contemporary usage, dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by law, constitutions, or other social and political factors within the state." I read this as: a state run by...

Re: Reproduction and Genetic Conditions

I think it would be best if all children could be produced from ideal stock. If pregnancy is wanted, then ideal genetic material should be used to create that pregnancy. Not so much because the parents have no right to bring a child with genetic flaws into the world, but because I believe they have ...

Moral Principles

What are your moral principles? That is, your basic conception (or lack of belief in the existence) of right and wrong, good and bad. Mine could be considered hedonistic. Happiness is good, and conversely, sadness is bad. I believe an actions moral value is decided by how much happiness it creates, ...

Concerning actuarial tables

Does anyone know which of a persons attributes an insurance company is allowed (legally) to discriminate based upon? And which attributes do they actually use to decide costs? I know there are actuarial tables to decide risks based on age, preexisting and familial conditions, but I wanted to know if...

Re: HSC/QCS/etc... IN Australia

I got 99.40 If I got that score in WA, how does it compare to scores in other states? I'm really glad our university admission system is so academic based. I'd hate having to go through community service and make myself seem like a particularly vibrant person and participate in extra curricular acti...
