Re: 2013: "Rock"

I feel the same way about 1I/2017 U1 (ʻOumuamua). Spending so long in the void that you no longer know whether you're an asteroid or a comet, cooling down to nearly the ambient temperature of the galaxy, then bam, you're right in the middle of a planetary system, nearly colliding with the system's s...

We tried to organize a conference on it, but the only people who would agree to give the keynote were random undergrads. I guess no-one else feels competent enough to po...

Re: 1910: Sky Spotters

I used to live under a military flightpath used by Chinooks ... Not frequent enough to make it unexceptional and that I never stopped guessing where the beat-frequencied "whoop-whoop" actually was coming from The beach we visit every year is right next to a Marine base with a helicopter w...

you can point to specific things that people believe, like that the UK sends £350m per week to the EU, which are simply not true... Fair enough, but speaking as a US citizen who probably would have voted to remain were I eligible to vote in the Brexit referendum, your specific example is an interes...

Re: 1865: "Wifi vs Cellular"

My problem isn't that the Wifi is less reliable/slower than the cellular connection, it's that my phone refuses to let go of the Wifi connection until the connection is beyond unusable. If I go out to my car in the parking lot at work, it shows 0-1 Wifi bars, but it still tries to use Wifi, and won'...

That number's name is bleem. You will not find it so easy to defeat, I am afraid. It has learned to hide itself from those who would do it harm, and fight back against those who persist in hunting it.

I've been a programmer for many years, and its made me reconsider my own expertise since after seeing this comic, I'm left asking "wtf is leftpad?". After googling it, I now understand. Doesn't help that the xkcd font doesn't show lower/upper case. I just looked up leftpad. Reading about ...

The gym is never cost-efficient compared to home exercise. The only thing a gym might have over home workouts is atmosphere. Now how much money are we all spending by being on this forum? Not if the gym has a pool for lap swimming. I wouldn't wager that owning your own pool that's at least 25 yards...

Re: Everything Must GO! One Week until the Rapture!

So, what's the over/under on the damages sought in the inevitable class action lawsuit against Harold Camping and Family Radio, and how soon said lawsuit will be filed? I'm betting damages north of $300 million, filed by Friday.

Re: 0861: "Wisdom Teeth"

Am I the only person ever NOT to have had major discomfort and/or loopiness after having my wisdom teeth removed? I just got a local anesthetic, no laughing gas, the dentist yanked and pulled for while, then I went home with some painkillers I never needed - and hydrocodone just doesn't seem to get ...
