Re: 1720: "Horses"

Fun fact: an actual horse can output significantly more than one horsepower for short periods of time. The highest power output ever documented by a single horse is 14.9hp. source

This is almost certainly an election thing. For those of you outside the UK who haven't been paying attention, we have a General Election tomorrow and it's looking like it will be like no other in a very long time. We have been subjected to a torrent of propaganda and hate that I've never seen befo...

Is a combining diacritic a diacritic that is combined with the character it modifies, or is it a diacritic that indicates that the modified character should be read as if it were combined with another character?

Re: 1205: "Is It Worth the Time?"

It's a really cool chart but I notice it treats an hour in the future as though it's as valuable as an hour in the present. The economist in me cringes at that because, as everyone has probably experienced through procrastination, we never value our future time as much as we value our present time ...

Clearly, the question is whether jumping or staying is more likely to lead you to understanding a magic lightning machine. There's a chance that the magic lightning machine caused the bridge to catch on fire, so I think I have to go with staying.

One morning, I killed a hobbit wearing my ring of power. How he got my ring of power, I don't know. I don't think this is technically ambiguous. It's not ambiguous if you understand the semantics. At a purely syntactic level, it is ambiguous--there's no rule that describes the relationship betw...

When you think about it, isn't the tragedy of the commons always the tragedy of somebody being a dick? Maybe it's not one person, maybe it's everybody who exploits the resource beyond a certain point, but it's always being a dick.
